Anakin walked into his classroom precisely on time and gave the students assembled there an appraising glance as the door clicked shut behind him. If you were late, you weren't getting in. "I'm Master Skywalker," he said in a voice that was intended to carry, "this is Ethics, and we're going to skip the introductions--I'll figure out who you are--and move straight to our first discussion."

He paced around the room, cloak flaring out behind him, as he handed out the syllabus. "Today's topic," he said, pointing to the top of the page. "Self sacrifice: knowing the difference between saving people and being a pretentious twit."

"Any time I ask a a group of people what they would do to save someone they love, they all blither on about how they would set the world on fire, lie, cheat, steal, kill, die, et cetera, et cetera. I've been at this school too long to believe that half of you haven't already been put into this situation and I'm in no mood to hear adolescent ramblings about how wonderful you were or might hypothetically be. Instead I want you to give me a concrete example of a time you admitted to yourself that a problem cannot be solved, and that to sacrificing yourself wasn't a statement, but merely pointless?" His gaze swept the room. "How long does it take for you to realize you can't fix everything by yourself?"

He would hear the replies and choose his TAs from there.

Azula remained behind after class. She stood in front of Anakin with crossed arms. She seemed amused.

The theatricality, the short temper he reminded her of a certain brother.

"Principal Winchester told me to speak with you."

"Did she?" Anakin replied. "About what?"

Azula raised an eyebrow, "I assumed you were told." She shrugged. "Principal Winchester mentioned something about pasts and how you'd understand about my past not playing a role in how I'll be treated here."

Principal Winchester had been vague and she hoped as hell it made some kind of sense on Professor Skywalker since it only served to confuse Azula. Although she had her suspicions...

"I speak with Principal Winchester on a number of issues," Anakin replied blandly. "I wanted to be sure I was on the same page as you were. And yes, here you will be judged on what you do, not what you have done before."

"I imagine working with her provides you with excellent opportunities to converse on a number of illuminating discussions." Azula looked him over, "Can I assume you've read something about my record then?"

Anakin nodded. "You were busy."

"I was," Azula agreed. "And Principal Winchester wanted me to speak with you."
Because, Azula suspected, he had been, to quote him 'busy' too. "I hope you're not under the mistaken impression I regretted my actions."

"And I'm not going to force you into repentance you don't feel," he replied. "But don't think you'll be repeating your actions here."

"This world isn't at war with my country, I don't see the point of starting hostilities here." She was a monster, yes, but she wasn't some creature who was controlled by the need to kill. Azula looked at him then chuckled, "I get it. You're the one who's supposed to keep me in line."

"I'm not your father," Anakin replied. "You make your own choices. But think of being here as a chance to start fresh." His eyes focused on hers. "To leave the baggage behind."

"Oh, believe me, I will be making my own choices. I'm done following my father," Azula retorted. "And that's easy to say, fresh start but I don't need it."

What she needed was the assurance she won't go crazy again. She didn't need platitudes.

And that reassurance Anakin couldn't give her. He didn't look into the future unless the future smacked him over the head with a vision he couldn't prevent.

"As you say," Anakin said evenly. "The door to my office is always open."

"I'll keep that in mind," Azula said, suddenly polite, thinking she'll never visit him. She nodded to him, "Professor Skywalker."
