Anakin walked into his classroom precisely on time and gave the students assembled there an appraising glance as the door clicked shut behind him. If you were late, you weren't getting in. "I'm Master Skywalker," he said in a voice that was intended to carry, "this is Ethics, and we're going to skip the introductions--I'll figure out who you are--and move straight to our first discussion."

He paced around the room, cloak flaring out behind him, as he handed out the syllabus. "Today's topic," he said, pointing to the top of the page. "Self sacrifice: knowing the difference between saving people and being a pretentious twit."

"Any time I ask a a group of people what they would do to save someone they love, they all blither on about how they would set the world on fire, lie, cheat, steal, kill, die, et cetera, et cetera. I've been at this school too long to believe that half of you haven't already been put into this situation and I'm in no mood to hear adolescent ramblings about how wonderful you were or might hypothetically be. Instead I want you to give me a concrete example of a time you admitted to yourself that a problem cannot be solved, and that to sacrificing yourself wasn't a statement, but merely pointless?" His gaze swept the room. "How long does it take for you to realize you can't fix everything by yourself?"

He would hear the replies and choose his TAs from there.

Hayley thought for a second. She wasn't her usual, smiling, cheerful self when she spoke "When they drowned Bianca," she said. "I mean, I was already practically arrested at the time, so all I coulda done was dive in after her, but it wouldn't have done no good."

"Is this Bianca the reason why you pummeled someone?" Azula asked.

Hayley nodded. "Yeah," she said.

"Close friend?"

"She was the strongest, prettiest woman I'd ever met," Hayley said.

"And you failed her," she said in a detached tone, like she was dissecting something.

Well, if Azula was out to make Hayley cry, she'd succeeded.

"I did everythin' I could. I didn't even see her go in the water."

She kind of was. Except... emotion. Soon Hayley would probably be dripping on her and Azula liked what she was wearing. She knew how to handle this with Ty Lee (no, she didn't) but Azula barely knew Hayley.

"Stop crying," she ordered, tossing a red handkerchief to Hayley.

Hayley dabbed at her eyes and nodded, doing her best to at least pretend to get a grip on herself.

"Yes, Azula," she said, like a good little soldier.

"And who was the 'they'?" Anakin asked.

"...Stupid vigilante who didn't know anything," Hayley said.

"Were you both in the wrong place at the wrong time?" he asked.

"I don't even know how she found us!" Hayley said. "But there was fire, and the shirtless guy started beating people up, and then this crazy lady in a mask chased Bianca out onto the pier. I didn't see what happened, then. But they told me that Bianca got drowned. That just isn't right."

Anakin blinked. Clearly there was a lot of this story he was missing. "So you're not sure Biana is really gone?"

"...you think they were lying?" Hayley said. The thought hadn't even crossed her mind. "Is she still alive?"

She was getting a little excited.

Anakin held up his hands in a placating gesture. "I have no idea," he said, "but they don't seem to be the most reliable sources of information."

"You're right," Hayley said. "I mean, the cops just are crooked and wrong."

Elle just looked over at her new friend and gave her the best sympathetic smile she could manage. And Elle didn't generally do sympathy. "That's the woman you mentioned the other night, right?"

"Y-yeah," Hayley said. "Some idiot in a costume drowned her."

"Costume? Ugh." Elle wrinkled her nose. "Not cool."

"No kiddin'," Hayley said. "I would love to get my hands on that bitch."

"I'd help, if I could," Elle offered. Hayley reminded her of herself, a little bit. And she hated hurting over people.

"Maybe we can hunt her down, when I'm allowed to go back to Gotham!" Hayley said, rather too excited.

"When do you think that'd be?"

"...probably not til I graduate," Hayley admitted.
