The Cafeteria, lunch

Dinah had done another look around the theater before she left last night, then checked every place she could think where Edward might be in the dorms (he wasn't hiding behind the washers).

Now she was investigating the food in the cafeteria, waiting on Priestly and Adora, and deciding that Luke's was definitely better.

"Me neither. All the restaurants in town are so much better," Dinah had to admit, smiling at Jack as he sat down. "It's edible. But I wonder if it came straight out of box. It has that vague plastic-y taste to it. How're your classes going?"

"I think Atreides' will be interesting," Jack observed. "She seemed terribly concerned I not change my opinions to match hers, which is -- sweet." Seriously, as if he would. "Castle's and Chevalier's are mostly for fun, I think. And now I'm done for the week! Yours?"

"That sounds like her. I liked Castle's, but you saw. He knows one of my fave authors!" If you don't count romance novelists. "Applied Science is Tyler letting us play with things and wreck them, so yay for that. And I get to be Mitchell's TA in World War Media!" Which prompted a chair dance. "I've just got Defense Against the Dark Arts this afternoon, and then I'm done for the week too! Wha'ts Chevalier teach? And what are we doing to do with four-day weekends all semester?"

"A whole class in wrecking things?" That was just odd. "I thought he taught science. Anyhow, I skipped Mitchell's class this term. It feels too strange to be learning history about the future. Chevalier is art. Nice man -- it all seems straightforward enough."

He raised an eyebrow at her. "I don't have specific plans, but I'm sure we'll find ways to entertain ourselves."

"Well, there might be some learning physics in his class too." Dinah grinned unrepentantly at her exaggeration. "And I'm going to lie around and watch TV for four days a week." Suuuure she was. "Or, possibly, get obsessive and research all the ways to become a legal P.I. that there are. Maybe."

"What kind of licensing do you need these days?" Jack asked, curious. As far as he knew, Sebastien's method was to simply announce himself and find a crime to solve. "Americans. You're so devoted to paperwork for everything."

Dinah snickered at his tone, and said, "Well, that's why I'm talking to one of the police constables here on Friday. I researched on-line and it varies from state to state, because some don't need it at all, and the type of P.I. you say you are, and I guess there's different permits for guns if you're a P.I. vs. a security person, and..." She made a face. "I don't know which would be best, for the kinds of investigating I want to do. Get an apprenticeship, or get a degree. So. Advanced career counseling, since Detective Constable Day said she'd help me out."

Jack listened carefully. It still all sounded far too complicated. "What kind of work do you want to do?" he wondered. "Cheating husbands, or murders? But it's kind of the Detective to help you."

"She's cool, we've sparred a lot at Fight Club. And I'm thinking more missing persons, and runaways. And cold cases. At least to make a living. Murders would be interesting--" And a lot more in line with her real job. "--but I don't know if I could make a career out of them." Dinah frowned and took another bite of her lasagna. "Or maybe that's a question to ask her? I don't want to be one of those P.I.'s that the police hate, though." She tilted her head at Jack. "How does your guardian do it? Do the police refer him, or does he advertise...?"

"That's a long time ago in a very different place," Jack said, as he buttered his bread. "He has a reputation and he doesn't need money, so when he hears of something that interests him, he finds a way to be involved."

"Oh, word of mouth. Yeah, that wouldn't work so well now." Dinah took a drink of her milk, and said, "You took Gibbs' Criminal Justice course last term, right?"

Jack thought it would work just fine if you had a vampire's lifespan, but kept that quiet. He nodded. "It wasn't bad."

"A lot of that course had to do with evidence gathering. And police don't like it when someone else finds evidence they didn't, either because of fear of publicity or because it might compromise a case. They also think some P.I.'s aren't working for the law, just their client. And some of them probably are." Dinah swallowed another bite of food, gesturing with her fork. "Which is why cold cases would be okay, since no one would be actively working on them."

"But if you can find the evidence and right the wrong, what difference does it make who gets to it first?" Jack asked. "It sounds like they're more focused on glory than on solutions."

"Some of them are," Dinah had to admit, thinking of various New Gotham cases that had made headlines. "Some of them are just really paranoid a good defense attorney will pick apart a case in court if it's not all cops handling it." She looked considering. "Does Sebastien ever have to testify? Or does he turn it all over to the police, once he finds the criminal?"

Jack talked a little about how all of that worked handwavily because it doesn't really come up in canon. "It works for him, anyhow," he finished. "You'll have to meet him parents' weekend, if he comes."

Dinah listened and nodded, and most of it wasn't the same for New Jersey 2009, but it was all interesting. 'Cause I like that one story. "Definitely! I hope Barbara or Helena can make it so you can meet them. Alfred too, maybe. Helena almost behaved herself when she met Priestly and the others who visited last week."

"I just hadn't seen them in a couple months." Dinah looked at her drink, took a sip, then admitted, "Especially after all the vampire stuff. I wanted to talk about it with them face-to-face. I couldn't seem to explain it right in an e-mail, in a way that wouldn't freak them out. That or the stuff in Vancouver. Barbara wanted an explanation of the plane tickets I bought."

"Not really, although she wasn't thrilled I didn't call in her or Helena for help." She grinned. "Like I guessed, when we were in the airport. But she said she was glad I helped a friend, and she swears she'll just offer me info next time a crisis happens. And she'll keep Helena from going off. I think she's finally getting that I'm an adult. Even if I'm not eighteen yet."
