The Cafeteria, lunch

Dinah had done another look around the theater before she left last night, then checked every place she could think where Edward might be in the dorms (he wasn't hiding behind the washers).

Now she was investigating the food in the cafeteria, waiting on Priestly and Adora, and deciding that Luke's was definitely better.

"A lot of that course had to do with evidence gathering. And police don't like it when someone else finds evidence they didn't, either because of fear of publicity or because it might compromise a case. They also think some P.I.'s aren't working for the law, just their client. And some of them probably are." Dinah swallowed another bite of food, gesturing with her fork. "Which is why cold cases would be okay, since no one would be actively working on them."

"But if you can find the evidence and right the wrong, what difference does it make who gets to it first?" Jack asked. "It sounds like they're more focused on glory than on solutions."

"Some of them are," Dinah had to admit, thinking of various New Gotham cases that had made headlines. "Some of them are just really paranoid a good defense attorney will pick apart a case in court if it's not all cops handling it." She looked considering. "Does Sebastien ever have to testify? Or does he turn it all over to the police, once he finds the criminal?"

Jack talked a little about how all of that worked handwavily because it doesn't really come up in canon. "It works for him, anyhow," he finished. "You'll have to meet him parents' weekend, if he comes."

Dinah listened and nodded, and most of it wasn't the same for New Jersey 2009, but it was all interesting. 'Cause I like that one story. "Definitely! I hope Barbara or Helena can make it so you can meet them. Alfred too, maybe. Helena almost behaved herself when she met Priestly and the others who visited last week."

"You went home?" Jack glanced at Dinah more closely. "Why?"

"I just hadn't seen them in a couple months." Dinah looked at her drink, took a sip, then admitted, "Especially after all the vampire stuff. I wanted to talk about it with them face-to-face. I couldn't seem to explain it right in an e-mail, in a way that wouldn't freak them out. That or the stuff in Vancouver. Barbara wanted an explanation of the plane tickets I bought."

"Was she upset once you explained?" Jack wanted to know. "It was the only way, and I handwavily reimbursed you for mine, at least."

"Not really, although she wasn't thrilled I didn't call in her or Helena for help." She grinned. "Like I guessed, when we were in the airport. But she said she was glad I helped a friend, and she swears she'll just offer me info next time a crisis happens. And she'll keep Helena from going off. I think she's finally getting that I'm an adult. Even if I'm not eighteen yet."
