The Cafeteria, lunch

Dinah had done another look around the theater before she left last night, then checked every place she could think where Edward might be in the dorms (he wasn't hiding behind the washers).

Now she was investigating the food in the cafeteria, waiting on Priestly and Adora, and deciding that Luke's was definitely better.

Of course it was. But sometimes a kid just had to get some cafeteria food.

"Right, so. No sign of the singing prince."

With no classes, Bobby was bored and sort of wandering aimlessly, which is how he happened to stumble across the cafeteria.

Seriously, how had he missed the existence of this place for two months?

And- huh. Was that Dinah! It was Dinah! Grabbing a piece of lukewarm pizza, he made his way over to the table where she was sitting.

"Hey," he greeted. Ever so eloquently.

"Haugh," Dinah said back, then swallowed a bite of sort-of lasagna, and smiled. "Hey, Bobby. How's it going, now that you're not the new guy any more?"

Dinah pushed the rest of her lasagna around her plate and grimaced. "Hey. I've looked everywhere but the Preserve. Adora was going to go check on that, she's a lot more comfortable there. She hasn't heard from him either, Priestly. And she got out-of-service messages when she called his cell."

"He's probably okay, though. I mean, this is Edward. He sounds like an idiot sometimes, but you don't grow up hunting trolls without gaining some skills . . . right?"

"Pretty neat. I didn't get a little sibling of my own, though. Did you know you had to sign up for those?" he totally hadn't.

"Ah, cafeteria food," Jack observed, as he took a seat at Dinah's table. "Every time I try it, I remember why I don't eat here very often."

"Well, yeah." Dinah put her fork down. "I mean, he doesn't understand money or technology very well, but he's not a helpless little kid." She blew out a breath and said, "It's just frustrating, not knowing."

"Yeah, I signed up, but I didn't get one either. I think they had a ton of people volunteer this time, so not everyone got one." She grinned at him, pushing over a cookie to share. "You wanted to help out the freaked-out transplanted new juvenile delinquents?"

Priestly nodded. "I know what you mean. D'ya suppose he just . . . left?"

"Me neither. All the restaurants in town are so much better," Dinah had to admit, smiling at Jack as he sat down. "It's edible. But I wonder if it came straight out of box. It has that vague plastic-y taste to it. How're your classes going?"

"He'd leave a note, or something, if he planned on leaving. Even if he didn't have much notice and couldn't say bye." Dinah was pretty sure of that. "Maybe he wandered off? That happened to Firekeeper and a bunch of other people over the weekend. The Radio said they're back now though."

Priestly sighed. "Man, at least with Claudia, I know why she's not around."

"Hey, I'm sure they're not all bad," Bobby said. "I mean, I wasn't!" Barring that night spent in jail. And the subsequent jailbreak. "Jean's letting me help with hers, though. Which is nice of her."

Okay, that prompted Dinah to reach over and hug his side. "Dude. This sucks for timing."

"I think Atreides' will be interesting," Jack observed. "She seemed terribly concerned I not change my opinions to match hers, which is -- sweet." Seriously, as if he would. "Castle's and Chevalier's are mostly for fun, I think. And now I'm done for the week! Yours?"

"Cool! I told Tony and Karla I'd help with theirs, if they needed it." Dinah grinned and teased, "What, no rule-breaking? No fighting? No pranks? No truancy? Tell me you at least slept in a class, Bobby. Or I'm going to feel really irredeemable."

"...Well," he blushed. "Four out of five?" The fighting had been against bad guys and thus totally didn't count as anything delinquent.

"That sounds like her. I liked Castle's, but you saw. He knows one of my fave authors!" If you don't count romance novelists. "Applied Science is Tyler letting us play with things and wreck them, so yay for that. And I get to be Mitchell's TA in World War Media!" Which prompted a chair dance. "I've just got Defense Against the Dark Arts this afternoon, and then I'm done for the week too! Wha'ts Chevalier teach? And what are we doing to do with four-day weekends all semester?"

The worry was written all over Adora's face as she entered the cafeteria. When She-Ra had learned no new news from the squirrels, she knew there was no possibility her prince was simply lost in the Preserve. Again.

Now there was only the hope that Dinah had learned something new.

"Just a bit, yeah. No leaving, okay? Not at least till we've graduated."

"High-five!" Dinah held up her hand, grinning. "I don't think I ever slept in class. So we're good bad kids. Go us!"

Dinah's hopeful expression and lack of Princely accompaniment probably put paid to that hope. "Anything?"

"I swear," Dinah said, getting a shiver down her spine, and tightening her grip on him. "And back at you."

"No," she shook her head. "Other than some very nice compliments about my hair, the squirrels knew nothing of Edward." And she was not going to cry about it, okay?
