BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Rather than fly from Philadelphia to Baltimore, Eric's parents had given him a lift. They had offered to drive him directly to the school, but he told them he would rather meet the group at the airport and take the shuttle. That way he'd get an early glimpse at all the hot girls he was sure would be going to his new school.

So now he was relaxing in the lounge, drinking a soda and waiting. It wasn't going to college, but it would do.

"What are you reading?" Didi asked, because it was something to say. She always had a soft spot for the lurky ones.

Jono glanced up momentarily, considering the girl standing nearby. And then he offered her the pamphlet on Fandom High.

Whatever was in that was pretty much everything he knew about the school they were about to go to. The boy he'd just spoken to had said it lied, of course. It looked far too much like a normal school, or something of the sort.

Didi considered it then took it, paging through. "Oh, you're going to school with me!" she said, as if that was the best thing ever. "I'm supposed to be a junior. I think. It's a funny name for a grade."

Well, third conversation was the one that was going to make it or break it, wasn't it? He'd spoken to two people already, and neither of them had flipped out over his telepathic speech. Time to try the third.

//Especially for a class with two years left,// he offered. Warily. //I'm a junior as well, from the look of it.//

Didi frowned when she realized the voice was in her head, but that was the limit of her reaction. She certainly didn't seem offended or upset.

"Oh! Should I think back at you, or talk with my mouth?" she asked.

... Well, that was a far more accommodating answer than he'd been expecting. Jonothon could live with that. He'd just make a point not to get used to it.

//With yer mouth, if yer please,// he replied. //I can't read thoughts, but my ears work just fine, luv. This only works one-way.//

"I can't read thoughts either," Didi reassured him, then tapped her temple. "You right now excepted."

She smiled, that settled. "So we'll be in the same grade, huh? I'm Didi."
furnaceface: (Sideways look)

//It's a pleasure to meet yer, Didi,// Jonothon decided. She wasn't staring. She seemed okay with him talking like this. That was a pleasure unto itself, lately. //I'm Jonothon. Me mates call me Jono.//

That was... more or less an invitation to call him Jono as well, yes.

"Hi, Jono," Didi replied. "You're from England, huh? Or do you just think in an accent?"
furnaceface: (Serious)

Re: Wait for the Shuttle!

[personal profile] furnaceface 2009-08-29 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
//The first,// Jono replied, actually finding himself slightly amused at the suggestion of the latter. //Though I've been livin' in America for a short while, now. Certainly not long enough to make me have to do somethin' like fake my own accent.//

"Some guys do it to seem more interesting," Didi said thoughtfully. "I have this one brother who sounds all English half the time, even when he's in America. I never understand why."

It was because Dream was pretentious like unto a pretentious thing that was pretentious. The other Endless easily adjusted their accents when they walked among the living.

"Good to know you aren't like that."
furnaceface: (Wtf?)

//I'm like a lot of things, luv. Pretendin' to be British is fortunately not one of 'em.//

He'd made a brief attempt at pretending to be normal, but that was a different matter entirely.

Didi could tell when a boy was trying to sound tough, and he got a slight shake of her head for that even though she could tell it was deserved. "So what are you like?"
furnaceface: (Reading)

Oh, if that question wasn't inviting an open floodgate of issues that Jono had to choke back with a vengeance, no question ever would.

He hesitated for a moment before throwing together a reply.

//Eighteen years old. British, as yer already aware. Got a bit of an obsession with music- Yer oughta' see my collection of records, luv. Well-travelled, I suppose. If yer count Britain, America, and Ireland for a short spell.//

He was enjoying this banter too much.

He was like a wounded puppy, all pain and pride. Didi had to fight the urge to hug him. "That's better-traveled than a lot of people," she said. "I'm ... well, I guess I'm 16 and from New York. It's complicated. And I always love music."
furnaceface: (Kinda down)

Re: Wait for the Shuttle!

He wished he could smile, then, and the pang he felt at the realization that he wanted to made him stop wishing altogether.

//I've got me a suspicion that 'complicated' is bound to be a trend in this school,// he noted, his tone in that moment entirely too tired before he pulled himself back to that other topic. Music. Music was good. Music was safe. //Any favourite band?//

"I went to this really good show last night," Didi said, distracted from the topic of how she was 'complicated' for the moment. "Foxglove. Have you heard of her?"
furnaceface: (Wtf?)

[personal profile] furnaceface 2009-08-29 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
//That's one that I haven't 'eard of, actually,// Jono confessed, wondering for a moment on that. Usually he at least had a passing knowledge of most bands out there. She was probably new. Or American. Or country. Or all of the above. //What does she do?//

Re: Wait for the Shuttle!

[personal profile] furnaceface 2009-08-29 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
//I'd appreciate that,// Jono decided. He nodded his thanks a little. //I haven't got anything to offer in turn at the moment, I'm afraid. My records are all in Massachusetts. But if there's a music store anywhere near the school, I imagine I'll be able to change that right quick.//

"I don't have a lot," Didi said, glancing at the bag Dream had handed her. Jeans and tank tops, from what she saw, and lots of books. "Maybe we'll go shopping together sometime."

//That'd do the both of us some good, luv. All I've got with me is that bit of readin' material, there.//

The pamphlet. The one that was horribly inaccurate, if Cal's word was to be believed. Given that people weren't running from him screaming, he was willing to give the boy the benefit of the doubt on that matter.
