Today there were coffee and pastries laid out on a trestle table at the side of the classroom, and the caption '7 DAYS TO DEADLINE' written on the whiteboard in large letters.

"Okay kids, next week is our last class, and you're going to be presenting your finished stories to the rest of the class," Rick said, leaning against his desk. "That means that we're going to spend today buckling down and doing some intensive work on them. If you need to make that last trip to the library or computer lab for research, get going. If you're having trouble or if you need a fresh pair of eyes to look over things, talk to me or ask a classmate for help. I'll be holding office hours for last minute hand-holding later in the week but if you want in-depth critique I'm going to need your current drafts by the end of the class."

He gestured towards the trestle table. "There's coffee and snacks if you want them, and you may listen to music on headphones provided it's low enough not to be distracting for everyone else. Otherwise, let's get writing."

Robin had popsicle sticks stuck to his arms and there was glitter on his belly.

But he was also raring to go on his story.

Eleanor couldn't help glancing at Robin. It wasn't in her nature to stare, but the sticks and glitter were hard to overlook.

"Mythbusting got messy." Robin explained.

"Apparently," she smirked. "Did you have fun at least?"

"Uh huh. We built boats. Then we tried to sink them with mirrors. It didn't work."

"Sink a boat with a mirror? How very odd. Who would have had an idea like that?"

"Well there's an old story that Archemides managed to sink a fleet of boats, but using mirrors to reflect the sun onto them and set them on fire."

"Certainly sounds like a story," she grinned.

"So we made boats and put them in a kiddie pool and then used mirrors and a flashlight to try to sink them."

"Just to see if it would work, then?"

"Yep. But it didn't. Hence the class name."

"Sounds like an intriguing class. Are you prepared for the end of the semseter?"

"For this class? I think so. The trick is deciding where to end it."

"Getting a bit carried away with your story?" she smirked.

"A little. I managed to keep pirates out of it for a long time, but I finally gave in."

"Pirates sound interesting. Are they looking for treasure? Or are they the bad guys in the story?"

"They're the bad guys, but they're funny bad guys."

"I think I'd like to read your story when it's done. If you wouldn't mind, that is."

"Oh I'd love it! Can I read yours too?"

"Sure. That would be great."
