Creative Writing [Tuesday, 5th Period]

Today there were coffee and pastries laid out on a trestle table at the side of the classroom, and the caption '7 DAYS TO DEADLINE' written on the whiteboard in large letters.

"Okay kids, next week is our last class, and you're going to be presenting your finished stories to the rest of the class," Rick said, leaning against his desk. "That means that we're going to spend today buckling down and doing some intensive work on them. If you need to make that last trip to the library or computer lab for research, get going. If you're having trouble or if you need a fresh pair of eyes to look over things, talk to me or ask a classmate for help. I'll be holding office hours for last minute hand-holding later in the week but if you want in-depth critique I'm going to need your current drafts by the end of the class."

He gestured towards the trestle table. "There's coffee and snacks if you want them, and you may listen to music on headphones provided it's low enough not to be distracting for everyone else. Otherwise, let's get writing."

Joan listened and thought about how best to end her story.

Free coffeeeeee.... yes, she'd already had three cups today, but Emma was happy to start on her fourth as she set to work on her story.

"Anyone willing to proof American football terms for me?" she called out sweetly. "I'm not very good with sports."

Chloe looked up and without realizing she was saying it, she heard her voice say."

"S-sure. I c-can help with that."

What had she done? She had just volunteered to talk to someone she didn't know without being pushed to.

Jon was sitting in the back row, listening to headphones while writing in a notebook.

Chances were it wasn't the assignment, and you'll have to smack him or something to get his attention.

Shilo still had no idea what was motivating her main character to leave behind his life of rock and roll glamor and excess in order to return to his hometown in Maine. Parental death hit a tad too close to home.

So, she approached Rick in hopes that he might know what to do.

"I want him- Jamie, my main character- to return to Maine, but I'm not really sure why he would," she said. She handed him her journal so he could read the story if he wished. "Maybe if I approached it from a philosophical angle? He finally got everything that he thought he wanted, only to find out that it wasn't all it was cracked up to be?"

"Fantastic," Emma sighed, handing over the notebook with her most recent draft. "I tried watching clips on YouTube, but I still don't really understand the rules."

Not that the rules were very important to her story, but still. Some accuracy was required.

"Sort of," Shilo replied. "He really pissed off his mom and dad by dropping out of a full scholarship in order to pursue this idea of being a rock star. And he dumped the one girl who really understood him because he didn't want to have to worry about cheating on her if he had groupies."

Obviously, Shilo's definition of "sort of" actually translates to "yes, in fact, he did".

"Not a lot of common sense," Shilo corrected. "He's very book smart- hence the full scholarship."

"Rochester Institute of Technology," she automatically answered. "His dad graduated from there. He was going to study physics."
