Driver's Ed [Thursday, Week 2, Period 5]

The Danger Shop was set up like a regular classroom to start, and Ziva was back up at the front.

"Good afternoon," she said, "and welcome back. I am glad to see all of you again. Last week, many of you indicated that you are very unfamiliar with cars, so before we proceed any further, I thought it would be best to discuss the basics of how these vehicles work. I can almost guarantee that this will be the only note-taking you will have to do here." She brought up a basic car diagram, and went through all the parts at a steady pace, along with the ever important mention of which pedal was which inside the car.

Once that was done, the room changed to an outdoor setting, putting everyone in a field by a oval racetrack and a handful of very plain-looking cars.

"Now, I could spend all day telling you how a car works, but nothing will teach you better than actually driving. I would like you all to break into pairs and take some turns around the track. If you are inexperienced, try to pair up with someone who has driven before, but do not worry about that too much. Because we are in here, you will not get hurt if you do not do well, but if I see anyone driving recklessly on purpose, I will pull you out. Is that clear?" It might have been, amazingly enough for her. "Then get to it."

"What?" Tara said, widening her own eyes. She put her palms on the wheel uncertainly.

"I don't know," she admitted quickly. "It just came out. How do I make this car go?"

"Put your foot on the brake and turn the key, then step on the gas when the engine turns over," Tara explained quickly.

She meant to stop there but it turned into "But I don't care cause sometimes, I said sometimes, I hear my voice and it's been here, silent all these years."

... at least she didn't stutter when she sang?

Penelope followed her instructions but looked over when she began to sing.

"I'm beginning to suspect something is going on around here."

She put the car into Drive because that much she did know, and pushed on the gas pedal. Slowly.

"We'll begin
With a spin
Traveling in
The world of my creation
What we'll see
Will defy
Explanation."

Oh dear.

"A whole new world," Tara commented.

"A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming."

"... yeah, I think something is definitely going on."

Penelope slowly crept along and desperately tried not to giggle. If she didn't think too hard about it, it was funny.

"I like those words," she told her, but then she opened her mouth and what came out was far different.

"Pumping up the volume, breaking down to the beat
Cruisin' through the west side
We'll be checkin' the scene
Boulevard is freakin' as I'm comin' up fast
I'll be burnin' rubber, you'll be kissin' my ass
Pull up to the bumper, get out of the car
License plate says Stunner #1 Superstar."

Blink.

"I don't know what I just said. Sung. I don't know." Penelope sped up, both hands on the wheel.

"It was funny," Tara giggled. "I'm sorry! It was!"

Which made it totally okay that the next words she sang were,

Got you where you wanna go if you know what I mean
Got a ride that smoother than a limosine
Can you handle the curves? Can you run all the lights?
If you can, baby girl, then we can go all night"

... oh, dear. She'd just hit on her poor shy (very very very pretty) driver's ed partner. In song.

Okay. Okay. It was! She giggled too, glancing at Tara before looking back forward at the track. "Don't be sorry! It is funny!"

But... whoa, wait a second. Did her partner just hit on her, with a song?

Penelope blushed but again, she giggled. "Oh my."

And she didn't mean for her head to go there!

"Oh, you are my guilty pleasure
So intoxicating when you know it isn't right
I'll keep it under cover
See the pressure's on cause I'm so into you."

Ooops.

If this was another crush on a straight girl, Tara would almost want to kill herself.

For now, though, it felt exactly right to let the grin spread across her face and sing back,

"I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react."

It was obvious Penelope was getting into the groove, because her shoulders were moving lightly with the beat she formed in her head. Still with the blushing but now with the added little sly glances at her partner.

And of course she had to compliment Tara:

"Could ya would ya aint ya gonna if I asked you
Would ya wanna be my baby tonight
Yeah Id take a chance slow dance make a little romance
Honey it'll be alright
Girl you got me wishin we were huggin and a kissin and a holdin each other tight
So could ya would ya aint ya gonna if I asked you

Okay, wow. That was specific.

It was, and Tara found herself shimmying to the same beat.

"You in the traffic for all eternity
How could that speed be where you want to be?" -- which was, actually, a comment on Penelope's driving. Sort of.

"Said don't you really want instant pleasure
Instant pleasure, instant pleasure?"

That had ... nothing to do with driving, and more to do with some interesting mental movies. What was she doing?

At that, Penelope laughed loudly with a slight backwards tilt of her head.

"This day is hilarious!"

... yep, another straight girl. Go, Tara. She could sometimes swear she had reverse gaydar.

"Hilarious," she agreed, with a tentative grin. "It's, uh ... fun to sing things."

Oh no. That small grin of hers didn't equal at all the peal of laughter from Penelope.

"Oh, I wasn't laughing at the words. I wasn't," she tried to explain, glancing between the road and her driving partner. "I'm Penelope, by the way. I should have introduced myself by now." In case the other girl hadn't heard her introduction last week.

"I'm Tara," Tara said. She had halfway remembered the name from last week anyhow - it was unusual -- but introducing herself was only polite. "It's not that I thought you were laughing at me or anything, it's just ..." okay, she never said this. "I like girls. So it was kinda extra weird to be singing like that at somebody I just met."

"It's nice to officially meet you Tara," Penelope said, smiling warmly.

And... oh. But really, there was just a mild touch of surprise flickering over her features; her smile was still there and every bit as genuine. "I'm sorry it was weird for you. Personally? And I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I was kind of flattered even though I know you had no control over what you were singing."

"It was way flattering," Tara admitted. "I just ... wasn't sure if you might kind of mean it, you know? But it's cool. It was fun. You have a pretty voice."

"I was thinking it, or rather there were thoughts in my head, so I guess that might mean I kind of meant it? I don't know." She was definitely blushing. "The songs just bubbled out of me. It was fun, I agree, and thanks. You have a nice voice too."

Oh dear. She should just shut up now.

Tara's smile grew wider. "It was definitely all bubbly with the songs. And whether we meant it or not ... fun to sing. And to drive. You're doing a really good job."

"Thanks, Tara," she replied, hands gripping the wheel as she sped along at about thirty miles per hour. She didn't want to push it. "Do you want to have a turn yet?"

Tara nodded. "If you pull off ion the next parking lot we can trade ~~and FTB because so many threads~~," she offered.

And Penelope did just that.
