Driver's Ed [Thursday, Week 2, Period 5]

The Danger Shop was set up like a regular classroom to start, and Ziva was back up at the front.

"Good afternoon," she said, "and welcome back. I am glad to see all of you again. Last week, many of you indicated that you are very unfamiliar with cars, so before we proceed any further, I thought it would be best to discuss the basics of how these vehicles work. I can almost guarantee that this will be the only note-taking you will have to do here." She brought up a basic car diagram, and went through all the parts at a steady pace, along with the ever important mention of which pedal was which inside the car.

Once that was done, the room changed to an outdoor setting, putting everyone in a field by a oval racetrack and a handful of very plain-looking cars.

"Now, I could spend all day telling you how a car works, but nothing will teach you better than actually driving. I would like you all to break into pairs and take some turns around the track. If you are inexperienced, try to pair up with someone who has driven before, but do not worry about that too much. Because we are in here, you will not get hurt if you do not do well, but if I see anyone driving recklessly on purpose, I will pull you out. Is that clear?" It might have been, amazingly enough for her. "Then get to it."

Jack didn't take notes about how the car worked. He knew all that stuff.

Arthur was managing not to look entirely non-plussed as he considered the cars.

Thankfully, this wasn't because of the steering wheel. For one, as he kept telling these people, he wasn't British. Please.

For another, even if he was, he wouldn't know about the steering wheels anyway. For a third... well, the general carness of the car confused him worse enough to start with.

"You have to pull up on the door handle to get in," Francine said helpfully, wandering around to the passenger side of the car nearest him.

"I know that," he retorted, "I drove a bulldozer."

Kinda. Sorta.

He yanked open the door. "I'll get it right," he assured her, "I'll get it right."

Jack was looking around for someone who wanted to pair up with him. Someone who would (shut up and) let him drive.

His fingers were nearly itching to be wrapped around the steering wheel and testing the limits of the car, and he felt a song bopping around in his head, waiting to get out.

"Hey big brother. You know how to drive?"

trying to think of a good driving song.

Wow, those were some really dull-looking cars, and Effy wandered over to stand beside one of them while she waited for somoene to join her, eying it dubiously.

She was pretty sure that even her parents' Volvo was more interesting than that.

"The wheels on the car go 'round and 'round," Claudia sang to herself as she got closer. "Hi!"

She could do this, couldn't she? It would be easy. If she could just quit feeling nervous about it. She could just let her partner drive, right?

The girl looked almost as shy as Tara, which made her an easy choice for a partner.

"Hi, have you d-driven before?"

Dinah's still humming. And singing under her breath. Happily right now. We'll see how long that lasts.

Mr. Smith had an oldsmobile
Baby blue with them wire wheels
I took her home the day that she was adverstised
He said she leaked when, it would rain
And sounded like an aeroplane
But I knew she was a jewel in disguise
She had a 455 Rocket
The biggest block alive
I couldn't hardly wait just to take my turn
She was made for the straight aways
She grew up hating Chevrolets
She's a Rocket, she was made to burn

Ooooh, this was exciting. Alice climbed into a car and looked around hopefully for a partner. She was sure driving couldn't be too difficult. And it looked fun, especially the bits where you went very fast.

The last time I had to try to parallel park between two cars, I got out and made [livejournal.com profile] noearsyet do it.

Yes, that was over a year ago.
