Library [07/15]

Sam had gotten into research mode as he'd headed to the library for his shift. Between looking for more people like himself - those who had been visited by Yellow Eyes, although he still didn't know if there really were any - and now trying to find out anything he could about Castiel, he had plenty to do and thankfully, plenty of time in which to do it.

"Not exactly," Raven said. "But I believe it would be related. I am seeking information about seeing the future through dreams. Or visiting other realms while one dreams."

Sam's first instinct was to wonder why anyone would want that, before he remembered that not everyone had visions of the future that sucked as much as his did.

"That's a little more complicated," he said. "Isn't that the sort of thing you either know how to do or you don't?"

"I am uncertain if one is born with the ability or has it develop later," Raven said. Her dreams had never been so troubled when she was much younger. "And I wish to know if one has a true dream of the future, if it can be changed...."

She hoped she didn't appear to anxious. "You are Sam, correct?" she added. "I am Rachel -- we shared a class last session but I do not believe we ever met."

"It's nice to meet you Rachel," he said. "I could probably find you some material on honing the ability if it's already there. As for changing the events of a dream...well, from personal experience I'd say that's the point of seeing what there is to be seen," he admitted. "Some people say the future's set in stone, but I know at least some things can be changed."

That last statement definitely got Raven's attention. "You do? You have changed your fate or seen another's change?"

Sam nodded. "I've had some visions over the past few years," he admitted. "They're kind of random, but I've seen people who were going to get hurt, and I helped to stop it. I think that's why I get them, when I do."

"So they are more warnings than a certain fate," Raven mused. That was certainly better news, if her dreams were the same. But it had been so real, she wasn't sure they could be the same.

And then, because she had to ask, "Are your visions related to the work your family does? I met your father not long ago."

If she'd met his dad and still wanted to speak to any of them, that was a good sign of character as far as Sam was concerned. "The honest answer is that I don't know," he said. "Sometimes, what I see does have to do with the kinds of things we deal with, but not always. It'd be a lot easier if they were related, that's for sure."

Character, or knowing one's potential enemy if ever the Winchesters learned her true nature and decided to hunt her down. "Have you always had this gift?" Raven asked. "Were you born with it, as I was with mine?"

"I think so," Sam said, hating how uncertain he sounded. "It just started up about three years ago, and I didn't do anything special to make it happen, so I assume...How long have you had your dreams?"

"My gift of empathy I have had since birth," Raven said. "But the dreams did not begin until I was ten years old."

"And you dream about things you want to change?" Sam asked.

"Yes!" Raven said, a little more emphatically than she may have intended. "These dreams must not come true."

"Then don't let them, if you can," Sam said. "I don't think people would get visions or have dreams if we were supposed to just let things go." It was strange to use the word 'we' there, but it felt surprisingly good.

"I will do all I can to change them," Raven said. Talking to Sam was much better than studying a book, but knowing his family hunted demons made her hold back. "Your visions are about others -- not yourself?"

"Yeah. I know that seems kind of weird. Usually, they're about people I know, but that's as close as it gets."

"What I have seen is rarely about others," Raven said quietly. "It is simply my fate."

"Then you can definitely change it," Sam said earnestly. "It's one thing to try to convince people that you know something is going to happen to them, and they have to trust you so they'll be all right. It's another thing entirely for you to take care of yourself."

Raven nodded. "That is what I hope. That is one of the reasons I am here, so what I have seen does not happen."

"In Fandom, you mean? This is a really good place for that, especially if you can learn something here that would be unexpected at home," Sam said. "Nothing shakes up supposed fate like an unexpected twist."

"Yes, in Fandom," Raven said. "It took some time and effort to adjust to the strong emotions this place, but it has proven worth it so far. I have been learning a great deal." She allowed herself a small smile. "Including from this conversation we are having."

"I'm glad I could help," Sam said, smiling. "If you want, I'm sure I can still find you some books about honing your skills and the like."

"Yes, I would like that," Raven said. "Precognition has never been my primary gift, like empathy and healing have been."
