Library [07/15]

Sam had gotten into research mode as he'd headed to the library for his shift. Between looking for more people like himself - those who had been visited by Yellow Eyes, although he still didn't know if there really were any - and now trying to find out anything he could about Castiel, he had plenty to do and thankfully, plenty of time in which to do it.

"You were there that evening," Arthur returned, his voice still mild. "Did you really feel he deserved to be patched up?"

"I don't think leaving him to bleed all over the place would have been a better idea," Sam said, sighing softly. "I think if he learned his lesson while getting beaten up, then yeah, he gets to be patched up at the end."

"It might have kept the lesson pure," Arthur said, sharply, "As by the sounds of it, what he's learned now is 'if I get bruised, I will be fawned over'." Evening out his voice, he continued, "There's a time for mercy. Right after he's used an innocent woman to drug us isn't it."

"I didn't fawn over him. It was just some bandages and medicine," Sam said defensively. "I do feel bad about Francine. She's too nice to have gotten mixed up with Chuck, and she didn't deserve to get used."

"No, she didn't," Arthur agreed, setting his jaw a little. "Watch it around Chuck. He's a disgusting rat of the worst kind."

Not that Sam didn't probably already know that, but Arthur felt it needed to be said.

He shook his head. "Think about that next time you choose to complain about your trouble all over a public broadcast."

"Have you ever heard the expression about keeping your friends close, but your enemies closer?" Sam asked. "Chuck is a lot easier to deal with when you're not actively working against him. I know first hand what he can be like when he's at his most disgusting."

"Francine kept him close," Arthur said, not quite as evenly now. "I'd rather not, if it's all the same to you."

He turned to leave, then gave pause. "Did you suffer any of the brownies?" Damn kneejerk concern.

"Only one," Sam said, with a bit of an empathetic sigh. "Luckily, I was here, and my boyfriend helped me before I did anything too embarrassing."

"None at dinner?" he asked, blinking a little. "When was that?"

"A few months ago," Sam said. He didn't add why he didn't have any at dinner.

... Yeaaah.

"It's happened before," Arthur established, having to trade up some of his calm-and-in-control for a kind of confused low-level brand of annoyed. "You took brownies from Chuck?"

Something finally clicked in Sam's brain, and he realized he had to be careful with what he said. "I didn't know what was in them. I thought they were just plain brownies," he replied, leaving out the part where he'd thought that because he'd gotten them from Francine.

"But you didn't," Arthur repeated, "Have any that night." He wasn't always the most perceptive man on the planet, but he could smell something rotten here. "Sam, Chuck's as slippery as an eel, you must be more of a gullible idiot than I thought you were."

For Arthurian standards, he was still being kind of nice about it.

Given the choice between defending himself or not digging himself deeper into the hole, Sam decided that he'd already dug down far enough.

"Clearly, I am when it comes to Chuck," he said simply.

"Clearly," Arthur said, shaking his head again. He was going to be nice and not point out to Sam how apparently, Chuck was kind of right about Sam being his bitch. So to speak.

"Avoid brownies in the future," he said, and turned for the exit again.

That clicked weirdly in his head, but Francine had served them - Sam couldn't have known Chuck had been involved.

"I think I'll be avoiding brownies for the rest of my life," Sam assured him, sighing. Sometimes, it was really hard to be friends with Chuck.
