Yes, there were even more tents on the other side of the lawn.

Yes, the tables and chairs that had been set up there were still close to the ice cream.

"I think it's sweet," Jack said. "I don't have blood family, but I do try to teach my chosen family well."

Sebastien's other courtiers weren't part of his chosen family. They were stupid and Jack was selfish.

"My family and I aren't close," she explained. "So I like making sure that other people are happy and do what I can to treat people with care."

'Not close' was a poor way of saying 'my parents left me to my own devices when I was not yet even ten because their jobs were more important'.

"It's a good goal to have," Jack said simply. He was deciding Maron was probably a good person.

And by "no blood family," he meant "my parents sold me for a servant at the age of five and I would have been worked to death or worse had a certain vampire not intervened." Euphemisms seemed to be the order of the day.

They certainly were!

"I think so," she admitted, "but then, I'm biased. Apparently it's silly to want to try and be happy. People tell me I sound like I live in a fairytale."

"Not particularly," Jack said. Of course, he was from a less cynical time. "Do you keep house for dwarfs, or have evil stepsistes?"

"No dwarves," she said, with a laugh, "and no sisters either!"

Of course, she couldn't say 'an angel helps out with the housework though'.

"Guess I'm lucky that way." Maron grinned. "Do you know many with dwarves and stepsisters who're evil?"

"Nobody," Jack admitted with a laugh. "I'll have to keep looking."

"What would you do if you found them?" she replied. "I should think they'd like to be left alone for the most."

"With evil stepsisters?" Jack checked. "That seems like a reason not to leave someone alone, if there ever was one."

"Well," she said, smiling. "Don't those in fairytales tend to come to some sort of fitting end? They might not need our help."

A pause. "Though I admit that I'd be one of the first to help if I knew of a situation."

"They do, but who's to say we aren't the ones to offer that ending?" Jack asked rhetorically.

"Are you a prince in shining armor then?" Maron asked, laughing. "Maybe our armor is our beliefs."
