Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were even more tents on the other side of the lawn.

Yes, the tables and chairs that had been set up there were still close to the ice cream.

Priorities are very important here at Fandom High.

"What's got you pissed off?"

She didn't sound particularly bothered that he was pissed off, just curious. After all, she'd been pretty pissed off for the first week or so until she'd really gotten to enjoy the new freedom. Maybe he was in the same situation.

"So many things," Bones said. "None of which I'm willing to discuss."

Or at least none that he was willing to discuss with a teenager who would likely cry once he really got ranting.

Ha. Ha. Ha.

"Been there. When I came here, in fact."

There was a brief pause before

"Sorry."

"Trust me, kid, it wasn't anything like this," Bones assured her. "Don't worry yourself about it."

Fiona delivered a glare that had, in fact, made Death herself take a step back and drew herself up. If she wasn't so uncomfortable, she might have been able to dismiss what she knew was an irrational amount of irritation for something that had been said off-hand, but there were too many people here.

"Fiona," she corrected him. "My name is Fiona. Not 'kid'."

A little of the venom drained out once that was done.

"But I won't." was delivered almost calmly, in fact.

"Sorry." The whole "kid" thing usually flew better when he looked normal. He was going to have to remember that. "McCoy."

He had debated on adding the "doctor" part to that but decided that he didn't really have the inclination to explain to anybody unless he had to.

That got rid of the rest of it. To be fair, being a 'child' in the eyes of her family had caused her quite a lot of trouble, but like that was McCoy's fault?

Not so much.

"Nice to meet you," she said, a little less prickly. She even offered her hand.

"Nice to meet you too," Bones said, shaking the offered hand. He was in no mood to be polite but figured if he was going to be here for a while then it would do him no good to shove people away. At least not on the first day.

Of course that also didn't mean he was going to be overly chatty.

"You here against your will as well?" she ventured carefully. She kept the handshake short, hoping he wouldn't notice the strange quality of her skin and require an explanation.

Bones was a doctor, of course he noticed. He was also a doctor on a starship with both humans and aliens, which would be why he didn't think much of it.

"Extremely against my will, yes," he said. "Landed here this morning. Literally landed. Shuttle's still in the junkyard."

"That's how I came here. Against my will, not in a shuttle. I came in a Maybach."

Which was a car, not that she specified.

"Maybe try the food? It's supposed to be good."

Okay, so, good food was the upside. That would be fantastic if he were Scotty.

"I'll have to keep that in mind." His stomach was still iffy from the whole black hole experience. "Anything has to be better than replicator food."

"I don't eat, so I can't tell you for certain, but... sure. Whatever."

She glanced around.

"It's not a bad place to be. Promise."
