Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were even more tents on the other side of the lawn.

Yes, the tables and chairs that had been set up there were still close to the ice cream.

Priorities are very important here at Fandom High.

"Having fun yet?"

Ah, the dulcet tones of someone being utterly laconic about something.

It was music to Valentine's ears, and she gave her little brother a small smile.

"I might be," she said, keeping up with her trend today of being vague. "There's ice cream. You? Chatting it up, I'm sure?"

"Sure," Ender agreed, neutrally, and glanced across the crowds. "Have you met Layla?"

"I haven't really met any of the new kids," Valentine admitted, and tilted her head at Ender.

"Should I meet Layla?"
endsthegame: (oh really?)

"I don't know," he said, equally laconically, and glanced back at Valentine. "She 'knows stuff'," his tone was light, like it was a joke, "Thought the two of you might have a fun time arguing about who knows more."

Despite herself, Valentine grinned vaguely. "Me?" she asked. "I don't know what you're talking about; I don't know anything more than what your other average seventeen year old would."

Really.
endsthegame: (not impressed)

He could've gone the straightforward path and asked her to evaluate the girl, but he wouldn't be Ender if he did. Not if he felt that wouldn't net him better results.

"Yes. My sister, the mental midget."

As if he even needed to. As if at least fifty plans for finding out exactly what 'stuff' this Layla Miller knew weren't already hatching in Valentine's head from the moment Ender mentioned her.

"Be fair," she said. "Not a mental midget. Just a mental average height person."

Which meant his tactics were succesful as per usual. Not that she was that unpredictable, in this. "Average height, average weight, average grades," he said, "I see."
