Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were even more tents on the other side of the lawn.

Yes, the tables and chairs that had been set up there were still close to the ice cream.

Priorities are very important here at Fandom High.

"Your little brother's taller than you?" Valentine asked. "Ouch. But I'll keep an eye out. And I think, yeah, yours is a combination. Most people's probably are."

"Everyone's taller than me. I'm used to it." It was matter-of-fact; at 5'5", Jack figured every man on campus except the redhead ninja was taller than he was.

Which didn't mean he wanted to dwell on it, thank you.

"I don't think you've mentioned much about the magic in your world," Valentine admitted. "Either that, or I've just not paid attention like I should because my world's pretty lacking in magic."

"We've had other things to talk about, mostly," Jack offered. "And I'm not a wizard so it's not as if I'm a font of information on the subject. It's, er, anyone can learn it but you have to be taught in a university. It's like any profession, and not one terribly respected by many. Professor Garret's a sorceress from my world."

"So getting a degree in magic," Valentine said, with a wry grin, "not much like getting a degree in English where I'm from."

"There are probably more job opportunities for sorcerers," Jack said, equally wry. "You get a tattoo to show you've gone through the course. If you don't have one, magic is a crime, though of course people do it anyhow. Which is probably not at all like an English degree."

Valentine grinned a little. "Yeah, it's hardly against the law to write dissertations without a degree."

Said the girl who was doing just that and posting them on the Net to great acclaim when she was eleven, la.

"I'm sure somewhere it is," Jack speculated. "Fines for using metaphors, jail time if you get caught committing poetry."

"And let's not even get started on what happens if you use a double negative or a dangling participle. I've heard some people might not even come back after they've been convicted of split infinitive."

"It's true. And for purple prose," Jack said, "forced labor, individually sewing pages into dictionaries."
