BWI - Portalocity Lounge [Friday Morning]

Chloe got off her flight from New York and followed the signs to the lounge. She dumped the duffle bag of clothes that Andrew had hastily purchased on the floor and slumped into one of the uncomfortable airport chairs.

She was still against this plan but she realized on the flight that sulking wouldn't make it any better so she was going to put on a brave face and make the most of it.

Tara had never flown before, and it had taken the flight from Eugene to Denver just for her stomach to settle down and for her to get used to how tiny the landscapes rushing by beneath her were. But somewhere between Denver and Baltimore, her legs had started cramping up and now she was just glad to be off the plane.

She took a seat on her suitcase and watched the students, half hoping someone would come to talk to her and half terrified of it. Everyone was so pretty.

"Wow, you look twitchy."

Way to go, Elle, insult the chick that looks like she's about ready to jump out of her own skin.

Yeah, Tara kind of shrank inside her skin at that one, wrapping her arms around herself and not looking up at the girl. "S-sorry?"

"You're probably not the only one, though, so don't worry." It was what passed for reassuring in Elle's mind. "So, why with the twitchy?"

"So many new people," Tara said. "It --" she licked her lips. "It makes me nervous."

Okay, that part Elle could kinda get.

"It is a lot of kids all at once, isn't it?" She gave Tara a faint smile. "I haven't been around this many people my age since I was young."

"I know everybody at my old school." They didn't talk to her, mostly, but Tara knew them. Tara finally looked up at Elle. "Were you homeschooled?"

Elle nodded. "For most of grade school, yeah."

"D-did you like it?" Tara asked, curious.

"It was kind of boring," Elle said. "Learning wasn't so bad. Sometimes. But the people my father had tutoring me were... dry. Boring."

Elle shrugged. "Learning wasn't so bad, sometimes, but the rest of the time it was kinda boring."

Plus her tutors had never liked her.

"I g-guess I can see that," Tara conceded. "Nobody to talk to."

Tara would be fine with books and nobody to talk to, but Tara wasn't most people.

"Wouldn't have been so bad if the people tutoring me were actually interesting." Elle wrinkled her nose.

"Oh! I'm Elle, by the way. Elle Bishop."

"Tara Maclay," Tara said, shaking her hair out of her face and holding a hand out for Elle to shake if she wanted. "I'm going to be a sophomore this year."

If she stayed into the school year, which wasn't certain yet.

Chloe had been watching everyone arrive and when she saw the other girl that looked about as comfortable as she herself did, she gave her a small wave.

"H-hello."

Damn that stutter.

"H-hi," Tara returned, uncertain as to whether the girl really stammered or was just making fun of her the way Donny did. "Are you g-going to the school?"

When she heard the other girl stutter, she gave her a small smile and nodded.

"You have that p-problem too?"

Chloe was a little relieved that she wasn't the only one that stuttered.

"Yeah," Tara said, making a face. "My b-b-brother always makes fun of it, and then I get nervous, and then it gets worse."

She shrugged a little. The girl could imagine. "I'm Tara."

"He s-sounds like a jerk," Chloe said softly. "I'm Chloe."

"H-he's older," Tara replied, crossing her arms. "He just graduated. He doesn't have a job yet. He gets bored."

That was a yes.

"I know people like that," Chloe nodded. Tori had been one of them until the whole escaping thing happened.

"Is this your first time going away to school?"

Tara nodded. "Is it yours?"

"Yes. I was going to a performing arts school before."

Tara was surprised. "H-how did you do th-that?" She could never perform.

She shook her head. "I wanted to d-direct, not b-be on the stage. B-Behind the s-scenes."
