Spy Games, Monday, 6/22, Period 5

Today, the Danger Shop was arranged to look like an elegant formal ballroom, with heavy chandeliers, a string quartet playing jazz tunes in the corner, and a buffet of light finger foods. Sarah, dressed to kill in a red gown slit almost up to there, smiled as she greeted the class.

"Welcome to your final," she said. "There are two key things somewhere in this room. One is a suspect called La Ciudad. All you know about this individual is that he or she is a Colombian national suspected of smuggling drugs and weapons, especially weapons. The other is La Ciudad's information drop -- the papers he or she is passing along to a contact. Your job is to recover one or both of these things by the end of class without making anyone suspicious. The hotel has its own security, and La Ciudad does not travel alone. Things could get dangerous."

"You'll be working in teams of three. On each team, one person is the analyst. This person knows how to interpret the papers but must be protected. The other two are both agents. It helps if one of you is the muscle and bodyguard and the other does the investigating, but you can divide that up however you want to."

She pointed off to two side chambers, labeled GENTLEMEN and LADIES. "Right now, you have ten minutes to find your team and then get into appropriate cover to circulate at this event, including any weapons or supplies you wish to carry. You'll each be wearing a mike so you can talk to each other or to me."

She waited a second longer, then: "Go."

Karla looked around for her teammates. Edmund she knew, but she didn't think she'd met Alice.

Alice bobbed her head slightly to the blonde girl. "So," she said brightly. "We're to infiltrate and handle ourselves in a spy-like manner. How should we like to do this?"

Karla smiled at Alice; she vaguely recognized the other girl. "Well, I think I'd probably be better at infiltrating or at analyzing than at protecting. I haven't been in Fight Club nearly long enough for that. I can shield myself or another with Craft, I can make myself or another invisible, and I have a few other handy tricks, like vanishing whatever papers we're supposed to find. I suppose I can also skim the surface thoughts of the people around us, since they aren't real and it wouldn't be violating anyone's actual thoughts or privacy."

The Blood were big on mental barriers.

"Which position would you prefer of the three," she gave Alice a conspiratorial grin. "We can give whatever's left to Edmund, since he decided to take his time to show up."

Alice grinned back at Karla, leaning in to lower her voice.

"Bodyguard," she decided. "I'm ruthless, and I have no qualms in killing those who would harm me. I don't appear particularly intimidating, physically, but sometimes I can stare at people in ways that make them decide to leave the room."

Alice unnerved people. Sometimes, it was useful.

"The I'll take infiltration," Karla decided, sharing Alice's feral grin. "We'll coo on Edmund's arm, pretending that neither of us have a brain in our heads, and I'll steal things while you break people's arms."

Karla liked this plan.

Triela split her attention between looking for her teammates and looking around the room. This, she was pretty sure, was exactly the sort of thing the Agency had sent her here to learn.

Claire was glad she at least knew one of her teammates.

[ugh so sorry! was on vacation and AFK]

Triela waved and flashed a grin.

[No worries! Vacation is awesome, after all!]

Effy wasn't actively looking for her team, because hell if she was going to look like she might be enthusiastic about anything. But, she was there, and waiting around in case they chose to find her.

This grouping, given the assignments, was pretty frikkin' funny. "So. Any volunteers to be the muscle?" Katchoo asked lazily.

"Uh, that's probably not my area of expertise," Ellie admitted. Not that any of this was.

No, Effy was in no way going to put herself forward for something like that. Probably wouldn't even if she was any good at that sort of thing.

"Not mine either," she said simply.

"Geez." Tambi was probably laughing her ass off about this somewhere right now, Katchoo decided. "All right, all right, fine. Who's getting protected then?"

Ender was on a team with his sister and someone he didn't know. He suspected that between Val and himself alone, they'd be able to figure it out without too much time wasted - with any luck, their third would make it even more likely.

Meanwhile, Valentine couldn't help thinking poor Emma, since she had to put up with the two of them. Still, she couldn't help be amused, with a grin to show for it, because it was a good team. She'd only talked to Emma probably once, but it would be a good team regardless.

"Darlings," Emma drawled, wandering over with a smirk. "The only question is; how quickly do we want this over with, or do we want to have some fun with it?"

She was not adverse to trying to cheat shamelessly, since it would be so very efficient.

"Just long enough," Valentine suggested. She had a feeling she knew what that smirk was suggesting, and she knew she and Ender could probably manage speed, but the trick would be to manage just enough speed to be good, but not so quick as to bring attention to the fact that you were so good.

"I could make this very easy for all of us," Emma sighed, glancing at the teacher, "but then our 'spy' cover would be blown, as it were."

She looked over the Wiggin siblings and smiled. "How do we want to divide this up? I confess, I'd make a very shitty waitress, even if I did pass my acting final."

Sam was pretty sure he was going to be the "muscle" out of the three of them, but he was okay with that. He looked around for Ino and Liir, wondering what they'd want to do.

Agnes frowned at the ballroom and shifted uncomfortably as she waited for Lois and Gwen.
