Arts & Crafts [Period 1, 5-18]

Steve was ready and waiting for the students when they arrived for the workshop. "Okay, so, this is Arts & Crafts, it's summer camp, it's traditional, so today we're going to do one of those crafts that's traditional at summer camps even in places other than Fandom, since gremlins in jars are pretty much Fandom-specific. I hope none of you have had any unfortunate encounters with the actual gremlins since last week, and likewise claim no responsibility for last week's rain of glitter. That being said, let's move right along to dreamcatchers. The idea behind dreamcatchers is that if you hang them over your bed, the webbing will catch nightmares but let good dreams through. I'm not sure if they work, but it's a nice idea, and I'm sure some of us could do with a few less nightmares." God knew he could. "So, the instructions are on your tables, along with the materials. We have several different colors of lacing, beads, and feathers. Have fun with it."

"Oh, I've heard of those!" Zack bounced a little, very nearly missing his mark with the scissors. His glove was a millimetre shy of being down one finger. "They live mostly down in the slums of Midgar, though. I haven't had the chance to see one up close, yet."

He wanted to. But he hadn't had the chance. Alas.

"It's so weird hearing about a demon house living anywhere," she said, with a grin. "I totally want to see one eventually, but that means winding up in Midgar. Unless demon houses are importable..."

Mail-order demon houses?

"I imagine a Hell House would be a little big to ship into Fandom," Zack mused. "And then there's the matter of figuring out where to put it. It'd probably be easier to just go to Midgar to find one yourself, you know? Honestly, I kinda want to see one up close, too. Just to say I did!"

It was all exciting, talking about wandering the slums in the hopes of finding a man-eating house!

"See," Ino said, grinning, "if we were better friends I'd inform you that if you go looking for a demon house that you have to take me along."

Because, really. Demon. House. It would be amazing.

"I wonder what the shipping rates would be?" No, stop thinking about how much it'd cost to ship a demon house, Ino.

Zack had to laugh a bit, at that.

"In Gil or the American dollar? I think you'd have to pay pretty decent money just to find someone willing to trap it, and then something to contain it in. Not to mention the person to hunt it down in the slums of Sector 6..."

He leaned his head back, thinking it over.

"Tell you what, Ino! If I get a chance to head back to Midgar sometime that I know I'll have the time off to get down under the plate, I'll take you to hunt one down myself!"

Yes. Because that would go well.

It might not go well, but it was likely that the two of them would have a hilariously good time should it happen.

"That's probably cheaper," she said, laughing. "And I'll totally take you up on it 'long as it's not an issue with anyone on your side of the universe!"

She just wouldn't tell Reno that she'd been to Midgar-in-the-past until after the fact. Somehow, she wasn't sure he'd approve.

"...what would people get to contain a house?" Huh. ~~Pokeballs, obviously.~~ "I have no idea how that'd even work!"

"My best guess is a really... really big box?"

Zack had no idea how in the world you'd contain a house that ate people, no.

"Definitely easier just hopping the portal or whatever it is you do to get back into Midgar. You like big cities, Ino?"

~~ZOMG. But now that'd be hilarious!~~

"They're okay?" Ino said, a bit dubiously. "I mean, I spent a few months in one."

In Paris. A hundred something years in the past. Pssht. Details. "Konoha's not small either, so I think I'd be good?" Konoha still counted as a village, however.

"Midgar isn't really like anything I've ever seen before," Zack mused, and then held up a finger and started rummaging through his pocket for his cell phone, his other glove forgotten for the time being. "I think I have some pictures of it, somewhere in here, actually. It's all huge buildings and traffic. That kind of thing."

He rummaged for a moment more, and then he grinned and pulled out his phone. Ah, cameraphones. He poked through it for a moment, and then held it out for Ino to see.

Midgar was a very... unique city, indeed. Also, green. And not in a lush, healthy way, either.

"I don't have any pictures of what's under the plate, though. I haven't been down there very much, yet."

"Oh, wow," she said, swallowing her comments about um, that looks like it's decaying, and no wonder green things don't grow there because she didn't think that would go over well. "That's huge. That'd take forever to explore properly."

A pause.

"And there's more underneath it all? How many people live there?"

Decaying already, and it wasn't even finished being built, yet. Midgar was a project only 24 years in the making, so far.

"How many?" Zack pursed his lips, thinking that one over. "Well, the plates above are populated mostly by rich folk and people working for ShinRa, and under the plates is I think mostly made up of cities that grew into one another as the plate was being put up. And each Sector is kind of like a city, and there are eight of those plus Sector Zero, which is the ShinRa building headquarters, where most of their military lives, so..."

It looked almost as though he was about to manage a real number, or something. It looked almost impressive!

"A whole bunch. Millions, I guess."

"...you guys have maps, right?" Ino asked, studying the pictures. "'Cause if I get to go there, I think I'm going to need one."

Just a bit, Ino.

Unless Zack wanted her to get cheerfully lost for months.

"Oh, of course we do!" Zack grinned and held up his phone. "My map is built into this! Do you have a phone, Ino? We could probably set you up with something, if you don't. It's a really good map, too. It shows where in the city you're standing at any one time, and everything!"

Oh, technology.

"Of course I have a phone," she said, making a face at him while fishing it out to wave in his direction. It was pink and purple. Ino had picked it because it was ridiculously girly and had amused her. (All the better to look like a ditz, right?) "Can you just transfer something like that over? I know photos and stuff can be done that way."

"I don't see why not," Zack mused. "I mean, it might be different, because your phone is probably from Earth and mine is ShinRa issue."

Actually, it was a Panasonic P900iV. ~~Square-Enix totally signed a contract for advertisement purposes.~~

"If it doesn't work, I'll just let you borrow mine if you end up wandering around Midgar alone," Zack decided. "Or I'll ask my friend Kunsel if he can find us a spare while we're there. There's got to be something, I'm sure."

"Do you think that makes a difference?" she said, shoving her phone over to him. "I mean, I think it's pretty up-to-date with what Earth phones can do. It's not an old model or anything."

If you end up wandering Midgar alone. Ha! Ino would totally slip off for at least a few hours just to explore.

"Best trip ever." Ino grinned. "And it's only been vaguely thought about."

Very vaguely, Ino.

Midgar would be a fun place to explore. Especially the stuff under the plate, where the monsters were more likely to turn up in the streets. Once you could get over the fact that most of the people under the plate lived in broken down trailers and hovels thrown together out of scrap-whatever.

"It'll be neat! I'm going to have to check with Angeal and see if there's anything they're going to need me back in Midgar for anytime soon. I'll let you know if I head back there for anything, Ino!"

He grinned and peered at her phone. "And we'll see what we can do about getting you a map, too. If all else fails, I guess asking people would work."

"You are my hero," she told him, beaming. "I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best! Will you need my phone to get a map put on?"

"Tell you what," Zack mused, looking her phone over and then pulling out a pen and a piece of wadded-up paper from one of his pockets. "I'll just write down the make of your phone for now, and I'll look into finding out how to do something like that. That way you won't be without a phone for, like, a week while I figure it out."

An employee of AT&T, he was not.

He was, however, feeling pretty proud of himself, even if he was fully aware that 'my hero' was totally just a phrase that people used sometimes.

AT&T was losing out! (Or possibly winning. But. At least he'd be a cheerful employee?)

"Works for me," she said, grinning. "After all, might weird out my boyfriend if he called and you picked it up."

...now Ino kinda wanted to hear the fit Ichigo would throw at that.

"I'd explain!" Zack insisted. "I mean, that I was just borrowing your phone so that I could put a map on it so that you could find your way when I brought you home with me!"

Sometimes, it was difficult to tell if Zack was fully aware of the words that were coming out of his mouth and the implications that they often had.

Ino blinked at him, and laughed.

"Don't say that to him," she advised around giggles. "Just... don't. You'll give him a heart attack."

Zack grinned, writing down the make and model of her phone before pushing it back toward her.

"Fine, fine. Since you asked so nicely and all!"

Zack was easy!

She picked up her phone, tucking it away again. "I do appreciate you not killing my boyfriend," Ino said, grinning. "Almost as much as I appreciate getting a map and maybe getting to actually go to Midgar."

Ichigo might flail at that too.

"Your friend who used to go here never offered to take you?"

Zack really couldn't imagine why. Midgar was a great city!
