Arts & Crafts [Period 1, 5-18]

Steve was ready and waiting for the students when they arrived for the workshop. "Okay, so, this is Arts & Crafts, it's summer camp, it's traditional, so today we're going to do one of those crafts that's traditional at summer camps even in places other than Fandom, since gremlins in jars are pretty much Fandom-specific. I hope none of you have had any unfortunate encounters with the actual gremlins since last week, and likewise claim no responsibility for last week's rain of glitter. That being said, let's move right along to dreamcatchers. The idea behind dreamcatchers is that if you hang them over your bed, the webbing will catch nightmares but let good dreams through. I'm not sure if they work, but it's a nice idea, and I'm sure some of us could do with a few less nightmares." God knew he could. "So, the instructions are on your tables, along with the materials. We have several different colors of lacing, beads, and feathers. Have fun with it."

"It's not forgetting if you're leaving them out on purpose," she said, grinning a bit. "I like the beads."

They got mangled less easily.

"But you need the feathers to tickle the dreams into better moods or something," Claudia replied.

"My dreams aren't going to listen to feathers," Ino answered. "And I think it's easier to actually deal with the dreams than pin your hopes on a circle with feathers and beads on it."

"But the circle is pretty!" Claudia replied. "I'm totally making earrings, too."

"To catch bad thoughts while you're awake?" Ino asked, intrigued. "That does sound interesting."

"And to look cute!" Claudia said. And really, that was her first priority.

Ino eyed her. "I suppose," she conceded, "though looking cute ought to be something that happens naturally, don't you think?"

"It takes hours for me to look this cute," Claudia said, eyes wide. "There's nothing natural about it."

Noooooo kidding.

Claudia made it hard for her to resist being a brat and baiting her. Ino sat on her first three responses to that firmly.

"Don't you think that's a bit like a lie, then?" Ino asked, artlessly innocent.

Okay. Maybe she should've sat on that response too.

"The trick is to make it look like you just threw it together," Claudia counseled wisely.

"Too much work for me," she laughed. "Anything I did like that would get ruined anyway."

"Why would it get ruined?" Claudia asked.

"Training," she said, raising an eyebrow. "Or gardening. Or being at work and actually working."

"Ohhhh, sweating," Claudia said, nodding. "I have different outfits when I do that."

"Somehow," she said dryly, "I'm guessing your wardrobe is, like, a hundred times more extensive than mine."

"Probably," Claudia said easily. Her wardrobe was ridiculous and she knew it. "I only have a quarter of it with me down in the cabins and it's already spilling onto the floor and stuff."

Oh dear.

"Why?" Ino asked. "It's not like you're going to be at the cabins for that long."

"Because I didn't know what I'd feel moved to wear while I was here, or what the temperature would be, or how many parties we'd have," Claudia explained.

It was entirely possible she thought more about her outfits than she did about, say, classwork.

Ino was getting that idea, yeah.

"You do know you can go to the dorms, right, if you really need something?"

"Yeah, but it's a long way to go for a pair of cute shoes," Claudia replied.
