Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Since the area with all the informational signs was bound to get a bit clogged up, even more tables and chairs had been set up on the lawn, in a slightly different spot.

"Wha--" Chie stared. "But that's-- oh, man."

Jennifer nodded. "Exactly."

"You... you're not lying to me, right?" She was new, too, so the likelihood of that was low, or maybe she caught wind of all these things and decided to spread them around herself and... Or, maybe not. Argh. "I, um, okay. I'm just going to roll with this for now."

"I promise you, I'm not lying," Jennifer said. "I wouldn't do that to anyone."

"W- well, alright..." Chie was hesitant to take it as the truth, but if she believed it, and was being told these things by different people, then. She was certainly going to end up having to find out for herself. Just because she had done some pretty insane, seemingly impossible things before didn't mean all impossible things were, well, possible. "Isn't this a bit much? And why wouldn't they warn us of these things before we get here?"

"I have no idea," Jennifer said. "I can't believe my dad would send me here, if he knew all this."

"I'm pretty sure my parents are as clueless as I am," Chie replied in agreement. "I'm totally blaming this on my previous school. It was their idea to do this program thing, and uhg, don't get me started on some of the weirdos there."

"I won't," Jennifer said. "Hopefully this place will be... nicer?"

"Oh, it wasn't too bad. Just..." She made a vague gesture with one hand. "Weird teachers. I wouldn't put this past them. But I'm sure this won't be that bad, either! Even with the... weird stuff."

"We can hope," Jennifer said. "Worse comes to worst, we can stick together."

"Yup, there's definitely that," Chie replied. "Though, I prefer not to dwell on thinking the worst could happen, and..." She trailed off with a shrug. "Iunno, most of this is kicking off too nice to think it will."

"Exactly," Jennifer said. "We probably have nothing to worry about."

"Not at all. So, here's too a good summer and year ahead of us, right?"

"To a good summer," Jennifer said.

"So, uh," Chie began lamely, trying to think of something interesting to talk about. She never did think she was the greatest at this. "What brings you all the way here?"

Jennifer's expression became pained for a moment. "My dad sent me out here," she said. "For reasons I'm not sure why, yet."

"Oh, um." By that look, Chie knew she probably asked something she shouldn't have. "Sorry." After a moment of silence, she lifted the container given to her earlier by Francine and opened the top. "Cookie?" she offered. "My sib gave 'em to me, but I'm sure she won't mind if I shared a little."

"Thank you," Jennifer said. "Sorry. Just some bad stuff happened, recently. But you don't need to worry about that."

She took a cookie and gave a little smile.

"Oh..." What a huge bummer. But they'd only just met and barely knew each other, so Chie didn't think it would be right to ask much or go the extra stretch for comforting. So for now, she would just settle with some (hopefully) encouraging words; "No worries, things'll look up eventually."

Jennifer nodded. "Sorry. I know that just made this a little awkward. But thanks."

"No, don't worry! I mean, it was my fault for bringing it up anyway and--" And okay, she wasn't helping any. "... You can have as many as you'd like, by the way!"
