Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Since the area with all the informational signs was bound to get a bit clogged up, even more tables and chairs had been set up on the lawn, in a slightly different spot.

He was caught and tried to look like he hadn't been staring. "Oh, hey. Nice day for it?" No, he wasn't very good at pretending.

Tahiri grinned and brushed a stray lock of hair back from her forehead. "What, you mean my feet?" she asked, wiggling her toes. "I hate shoes."

"You don't worry about roughing 'em up?" Griff wondered. "Or broken bits of glass, that sort of thing?"

"I wear them if I have to," Tahiri said, the way she wrinkled her nose indicating that she really hated doing it when it was necessary. "Usually when I'm on some unfamiliar planet. But around here I don't really bother."

Which made sense up until the planet part hit his brain. "Seriously?"

"Yes, seriously." Tahiri paused. "Oh, stang, did nobody warn you about that part yet?"

"Well it doesn't count coming from a girl with a red satellite dish on her head," Griff answered, thinking they were all in on some joke here.

Tahiri laughed. "She wasn't kidding, actually. There's always room for more surprises around this place."

"More surprises? Like, what, the trees come to life and attack on the walk to class?" Griff was having more in common with that Barry Plodder fellow by the hour.

"That hasn't happened yet," Tahiri mused. "Although I did hear that the decorations came to life at the seniors' graduation party and tried to attack them. Which sort of proves the point, it could happen. Fandom's a . . . really interesting place."

"Yet," Griff repeated, mulling this over and starting to talk to himself a bit. "Yet implies likelihood. Decorations alive? Sure, why not? I'm surprised your shoes didn't talk you out of wearing them, because that's bloody likely."

"No, that was just me being glad to walk on cool ground after growing up in the desert." It struck Tahiri right about then that something about the boy's speech sounded familiar. "Your accent . . . you sound like you're from Coruscant, but you're from this planet, aren't you?"

Accent? She wanted to talk about where he was from on this planet. Griff laughed a sputtering sort of nervous laugh. "Yeah, I'm from the UK sorta."

"It's just weird. My boyfriend sounds kind of like that, and he's from my galaxy," Tahiri said sheepishly. "Anyway, yeah. People come from all over here."

"Sorry, this'll take a minute to get used to," Griff replied. "More than the shoeless thing or the robes."

"Only a minute? You're adjusting better than some of the people I've met," Tahiri teased.

He laughed again, "I think I'll take that compliment and pretend I'm doing well."

"You haven't freaked out. I'd say you're doing pretty well." Tahiri took a step closer and held a hand out. "Tahiri Veila, by the way. Nice to meet you, um . . . ?"

"Griff O'Conner," he said, moving in to shake her hand, amazed someone was markedly shorter than him for once today. "I'd add something about being new to that, but I think you realized it already."

"You can kind of tell who the new kids are." Tahiri grinned; up, of course, as usual. Whether or not she realized it her job at these things was to make people feel better about their height, apparently. "Welcome to Fandom, Griff."

"Thanks, with any luck I'll be perfectly adjusted next you see me. Or incarcerated." For the murder of his roommate.

"That second part," Tahiri observed, "doesn't sound so promising. Don't do that?"

"I intend to avoid it, but you never know how these new living situations will go," Griff told her. "Does most everyone have a bunkmate?"

"Pretty much." Tahiri nodded and fiddled with her sleeve. "Is your roommate one of the new kids, or have they been here a while?"

"If he's not new, I understand why any old roommate turned him out," Griff replied. "Boy named Karev, pure acid, that one."
