Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Since the area with all the informational signs was bound to get a bit clogged up, even more tables and chairs had been set up on the lawn, in a slightly different spot.

Now that she'd had met a few people, Ellie felt slightly less overwhelmed. She was still there, watching the crowd.

"Hi, there!" Turtle gave the new girl a smile and a wave. "You're new, right?"

"Hi," Ellie greeted cheerfully. "I am new, yeah. Must be easy to pick out the newbies, huh?"

"Well," Turtle shrugged modestly, "I've been here for a while, and it does sort of become easier the more you do it. My name's Turtle, and if you need anything at all, I'd be happy to help."

"I'm Ellie," she replied. "Nice to meet you, Turtle. Nickname, I'm guessing?"

"Yeaaaaaaaah," Turtle said, laughing a little. "I've got to start throwing that in there when I introduce myself; almost everyone asks."

"Nicknames are good," Ellie said. "Hardly anyone refers to me by my full name."

"I'd ask," said Turtle, "but then I'd have to tell you my real name in return, but no way. It's awful."

Ellie grinned. "At least we can't be blamed for the names our parents gave us."

"And at least we've got pretty good fallbacks. I like Ellie; it's pretty. I briefly had a roommate named Ella. That's close."

"My roommate has the same name as me, but luckily she goes by Eleanor," Ellie replied. "Good thing because I don't need to be more confused than I already am."

Jack had noticed the brunette on the shuttle the evening before; now that he was getting his feet underneath him a bit, he was trying to meet more people.

"So what are you making of all this?" he asked her, with a quick smile. "I'm Jack, by the way. I think we came in together last night."

"I'm Ellie," she replied, returning the smile. "I'm still trying to process it all."

She had been told a lot of strange things. Like how she was in 2009.

"That would make two of us," Jack said. "People keep telling me things that make no sense at all, with entirely straight faces."

"Same here," Ellie said. "They all seem to believe it, so I'm starting to wonder if it's all true. This is really 2009?"

"It seems to be what everyone tells me," Jack said, in the tone of one who'd given up on this point. "It was 1899 when I left home this morning."

"Oh wow. So this is an even bigger culture shock for you," Ellie said sympathetically. "It was 1996 when I left home."

"Ask me in a week," Jack requested. "Right now I can see the clothes are odd, and the bus that took us here was odd, and people here all know different history. But I don't think it will all set in until I have to try to live in this year for a bit."

"I'd be glad to help you figure out the technology and all that kind of stuff if you need it," Ellie offered. "But I think some of it's even more advanced now than it is...was...in 1996."

"You can at least help with the basics," Jack suggested. "I appreciate the offer."

Ellie smiled. "Well then I'd definitely be glad to."
