Sam was still catching up on the sleep he'd missed over the weekend, and nearly overslept to the point of being late to the library.

He still managed to find the time to grab coffee though. Priorities were important!

"And at least they weren't all a surprise," Sam said. "It was nice to see John William again."

Dean smiled. "Yeah. He's a great kid. Had it rough lately though, poor guy."

"He did seem a little mellow. Did he tell you what was up?"

"He didn't say anything to you?" Dean asked surprised.

Sam shook his head. "I didn't want to press too much. I figured that was your job."

Dean took a deep breath. "Apparently I'm an idiot in John William's reality and got myself killed, to save you."

Sam frowned deeply as he tried to figure out whether or not Dean was kidding. "It goes without saying that you're never allowed to do that here, right?"

Dean ignored that because a) duh, and b) if it came down to either him or Sammy, there wasn't a question what he'd choose.

"He came through the portal on purpose this time, to see me," he said instead. "To ask me to go back with him."

"Oh wow," Sam said sadly. "I'm sorry, that had to have been a rough conversation."

"To put it mildly," Dean said. He smiled a little. "Cas saved the day though."

"Your angel baby?" Sam asked.

"Yeah, and yeah, that still totally freaks me out. Turns out I was the same idiot in Cas' reality and that's how I meant the angel in the first place," Dean said. "He brought me back. Cas said the same thing was going to happen to John William's me."

"Well, that's good," Sam said, at least fairly certain about that. "That still doesn't mean it's allowed to happen here."

"Yeah, well, I won't be that idiot if you don't put me in a position where I have to be," Dean said.

"I'm not the one who's going to go off hunting after he graduates," Sam pointed out. "At least, not full time."

"I'm a hunter," Dean said, spreading his hands. "I mean, could you really see me going to college somewhere?"

"If you wanted to," Sam said. "My only point was that you're going to be in more dangerous situations than I am on a regular basis."

"Good," Dean said. "Lessens the chance of you needing saving."

"You're smart, Dean," Sam said. "You'd figure out a way to save me without making me lose you."

"I think we'd all appreciate it if I didn't have to though," Dean said.

Sam laughed softly. "I would too, believe me. If I had my way, we'd both be safe all the time."
