Child Development- 1st Period- Class #13

The students coming to class today would find their teacher a little on the late side.

And when she did show (don't even try enacting the five minute rule), she was wordless, dancing the hula to some imaginary music, complete with the outfit.

And then, a couple minutes in, it wore off.

Lily stared at the class, her mouth open in a wide embarrassed "O", and finally rallied, clapping her hands together. "SO. We were going to talk about problems in school today. I... seem to have left my handouts and everything at my apartment somehow. Can't imagine why. So I'd like you all to pair up and discuss a problem a school-age child might have in school and how you would go about dealing with it. And then when you're done... get a stuffed animal from the toy box and cuddle it."

"God, I hope that doesn't happen to me," Angela said with feeling.

Talking about someone else's problems, was something she could definitely do.

Angela nodded, leaning her chin into her hand. "You alright?"

Peyton shrugged. "I hid in my room for like 4 days."

"Way too much time to think."

"I didn't and I almost wish I had," Angela shared.

"Yeah?" Peyton said. "What happened? You okay?"

"I will be," she said, nodding a little. She'd be dreaming about them for a while yet, but she was studiously avoiding thinking about that part.

"I am just... not cut out for zombies."

They'd probably get onto the school related problems eventually here.

"Me neither," Peyton said glumly. "Which is why it's so damn perverse that I'm - whatever I'm doing - with like the king of zombie killing."

"Apparently," Peyton said, not looking any brighter. "I'm kind of embarrassed even to talk to him."

"Oh, sweetie. You weren't the only one hiding," she told her, trying to be reassuring. "And I'd be willing to bet that safely in your room is exactly where he'd have wanted you."

Triela glanced over at Claire, eyebrow raised in silent offer of partnership.

Claire shrugged and swiveled toward Triela. "What kind of problem shoudl we talk about?"

"I don't know," Triela admitted. "The only school experience I have has been here, and somehow I don't think those are the kinds of problems she's talking about."

"So you were home schooled or something?" Claire snorted. "Lucky."

"Not exactly," Triela snorted. "I just don't have any memories from before a couple of years ago. Cuts down on the life experience thing a bit."

She shrugged. "But that makes you the expert on problems..."

"Oh." Claire's eyes went really wide. "Uh. Sorry. That's awful."


And then she hopped over to the safer ground of the assignment. "How about, um, what should you do if your child doesn't have many friends."

"yeah," Claire said. "Kids are brutal if you don't fit in."

"So what would you do," Triela asked with a frown. "It's not like you can threaten them, right?" Because, sadly, sometimes violence wasn't the answer.

"I wish," Claire said. "My mom always told me to just walk away, 'cause if you react that's giving them what they want. Plus, if you hit people you get epic detention."

Francine wondered, as she waited for a partner, whether unexpected onstage nudity counted as a school-age problem.
