Sam had woken up late, nearly lost Scout on his morning walk to him chasing after a teal deer, had to get his coffee made twice at the Perk for it to be right, and he was still smiling when he got to the library. It was possible he was still pleased from last night's radio broadcast.

Sam had been so gleeful at the idea of Peter knocking Chuck down a few pegs that he hadn't thought about the fact that Dean might hear the same news and wonder about it all.

"He was a jerk in detention," Sam said, passing one of the sodas to Dean. He wanted to come up with an explanation that would satisfy Dean and keep himself out of trouble. "I think it was just the last piece needed to make Peter snap."

"What kind of jerk?" Dean pressed as he settled down in his usual chair. "And why is this the first I'm hearing about it?"

"His usual kind of jerk," Sam said, shrugging to try to downplay things. "It wasn't that big of a deal."

"Peter," Dean said, "is one of the most even keeled people that I've ever met. He thought it was a big deal."

"Well, it was a big deal for him," Sam allowed. "It shouldn't be that big of a deal to you."

"You do know the more you dodge me, the more I'm thinking there's something to hide," Dean pointed out.

"It was just a stupid dare," Sam said weakly.

Dean gave him a 'go on' look.

"Detention was like a sleepover," Sam explained. "We had to play Truth or Dare, and before we played...remember how I said John Sheppard won a bet?"

Dean's eyes narrowed. "Yeah..."

Sam looked a little guilty, and focused down on the desk. "Chuck offered John $5000 to dare me to kiss him during the game."

"And he took it?" Right. Dean was really going to have to have words with his former cabinmate.

"Of course he took it," Sam said. "He's not an idiot."

"That's open to debate," Dean said darkly.

"If someone offered you $5000 to do something that wouldn't hurt you in any way, you wouldn't take it?" Sam asked incredulously.

"Depends on if it would hurt someone else," Dean said. That was totally obvious to him.

"Yeah, well, it only hurt me because I was stupid and took the dare," Sam said. "I just didn't want to give Chuck an excuse to make fun of me, you know? I thought maybe it would show him that I'm willing to call his bluff if I have to."

"Well of course you took the dare," Dean said as if that was the only option. "I mean that was pretty much all you could do. John's a guy. He knows that."

Sam looked visibly relieved at Dean's take on things. "Peter said I should have said no to the dare. And I get why he thinks that, because he doesn't want me kissing anyone who's not him. I told him it didn't mean anything, but...well, that's what set him off, I think."

"Hey, just because I understand why you took the dare doesn't mean I don't intend to go off on Bass myself," Dean said. "That's crossing a whole bunch of lines."

"Peter already did whatever he did. That's enough," Sam said.

"You know how you felt you had to take the dare? Well I have to make sure Bass knows he's not allowed to mess with you."

Sam scowled at Dean. "Don't do anything that'll get you into trouble," he said. "Chuck's not worth detention."

"Yeah, but you are," Dean told him.

Sam smiled softly, but shook his head. "Not this time. I could have said no."
