Child Development- 1st Period- Class #11

Don't ask why Lily was wearing a Santa hat in class in March. The end of March, even. But there was a giant Christmas tree in the playroom! And there were presents underneath!

"We were going to talk about personality but you know what, no, we're having Christmas," Lily announced. "Those four to six-year-olds? You're going to watch them open presents and experience the childlike glee. That's it. Merry fake Christmas!"

Claire kept one eye on the children, just to make sure nobody was bleeding or hitting the other kids. Most of her attention was on nomming candy (mmmm, healthy breakfast!) and trying to play Battleship against herself.

"Eeee, they're so cute when they're--" Francine paused. "Eating wrapping paper. No, stop that, honey." She went over to substitute a candy cane into the hands of a little girl on the four end of the four-to-six spectrum, then came back with a sigh. "They're so cute when they're trying to poison themselves."

"I know, and they're so happy," Claire said, after she swallowed a mouthful of foil-wrapped chocolate Santa. "Like, I don't think I was even this happy that weekend when we were randomly kids."

She eyed two of the small boys. "Do you think the redhead's going to try to steal the other one's truck?"

"Nah - I mean, he's got his--" And then came the wailing. "--own. And now he has two!"

"Hang on a sec," Claire said, heading toward the sound of the wailing.

The redhead was unimpressed by Claire's efforts at how-would-you-feel-if-he-grabbed-your-toy? logic, but rescinded the truck to its rightful owner in exchange for three chocolates. "Bribery's not bad or anything, is it?" she asked Francine rhetorically as she sat back down. "I mean, it's not like we're keeping the kids."

"In the long term, probably," Francine said. "But when you're babysitting it works wonders."

"And this is Christmas, so we shouldn't give 'em time outs or anything," Claire pointed out. "That would be really freaking mean."

She leaned back on her palms. "How have you been, anyhow?"

Francine slowly unwrapped a candy cane. "I have candy and I went horseback riding on Sunday and didn't fall off, so yay. My b--" Except they hadn't actually said that, so much, had they. "Uh, big-eared friend person? Is a bird and before that he thought he was gay, so um. I may have to get back to you on that?"

"Merlin's a bird?" Claire asked, bypassing the whole issue of relationship titles. "Yeah, I saw him when he was ... you know. Cal was the one leading the gay pride parade."

She shrugged. "Maybe it's a weird island thing, like their accents?" She was leaving out that Cal still kind of thought he might be right about Merlin, because that was entirely not helpful.

"They got gremlin-bitten," Francine said. "Or at least Merlin did. I assume Cal did too because otherwise he was being a big jerk, and I don't think he's like that."

"He's not," Claire agreed quickly. "I mean, he has his moments, but I stopped talking to him when I realized he wasn't going to say anything except telling me Merlin was gay again. That wasn't like him."

She started messing with the pile of foil wrappers, scrunching them together. "Did you get to talk to Merlin between that and the bird thing?"

"Nope." Francine shook her head, getting a poke on the roof of her mouth with her now-sharp candy cane for her trouble. "Ow. But Arthur came and told me about the gremlin."

Claire blinked. "Arthur did something, like, decent?"

She was easily impressed on this point.

"But that's something, you just -- HEY! NO HITTING! -- you just have to wait for him to not be a bird. Right?"

"Arthur's not bad," Francine insisted. "He's a good guy. He's just kind of....cranky." She knew no one else like that. Really.

"I don't even really know him," Claire admitted, keeping an eye on the kids. "Just the way he sounds on radio and what people say about him. He freaked at me his first day here, but I was trying to take his picture."

"Underoos don't go there," Francine called. To Claire, she said, "They're a little...technology-challenged. I guess I can understand the freaking."

"Oh, totally, it just didn't really make us wanna be BFFs," Claire noted. "God, I'm so glad I'm not from further in the past then -- excuse me, I think that one's putting a Lego up her nose."

"Legos don't there either," Francine said patiently. "Only smells go there."
