Mathematics: All Classes

I thought we'd get off on an easy start, so all I want you to do today is tell me your favorite number and why.

(ooc: Player did not like the effects of blood test/tetanus shot and will be curling up in bed with stuffed toy dog now.)

After class, Sam stands by the doorway, waiting for the other students to file out. "Excuse me, Professor Eppes?"

"Yes? That's me," Charlie adds.

Sam laid her incredibly heavy bookbag on the floor next to his desk. "Hi, I'm Sam Carter. I believe that my friend, Janet Fraiser, talked to you about setting up an Independent Study or opening up the advanced math class?"

"Anyway, she said you wanted to meet with me first, so here I am," she smiled.

"Oh, right!" Charlie puts his stack of papers to the side to focus on the blonde. "I wanted to see you before I decided. Talk to you, you know, to see if you could do it." He smiled. "Your friend was very insistent, but I thought I should meet you as well, hear what you have to say."

"Okay," she said, smiling somewhat shyly (and maybe a little bit in awe of the man). "What would you like to know? I'm ~~a PhD~~ extremely interested in Theoretical Astrophysics, and am hoping to go to the Air Force Academy after graduation, with ~~the Stargate program~~ NASA as my goal after that."

"Ahh. I see. Not quite beginners material, no." Charlie nodded, thoughtful. "What kind of work would you be interested in doing for Independent Study?"

"I'm actually not sure about that," she said, gesturing with her right hand. "On the one hand, I'm thinking of developing some encryption algorithms ~~based on models from alien technology~~, but I'd also like to hear any suggestions you have."

(ooc: my arm hurts like woah at the moment, so can we work this out in slow-time?

Sam and Janet get their Independent study group thing, by the way, but Charlie would like to talk to John before he gets in. *grins*)

(ooc: No, go, go, rest your arm! Slow time is fine (and mun is sort of a math geek, but at nowhere near Sam's level, FYI.) :) Thanks. Will pass the message on to John.)

(ooc: Charlie-mun is totally not -- and not to mention constantly morbidly certain she's using english math terms wrong. So, uh, I wasn't actually planning on giving real maths assignments, but if you have ideas for Advanced, Charlie would love an email.)

OOC: This mun is so not a math geek, but is willing to play along for the sake of the character. Because let's face it, like Janet wouldn't enjoy math?

We talked about maybe an independent study thing? For me and my friend Sam ([Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]). Our friend John ([Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]), he'd be interested too.

Charlie looks up from the piece of paper he's studying and smiles. "Hello. I remember you."

"Great," says Janet. "I like to think I'm memorable. Sam told me you'd approved an independent study, at least for her and I. Do we come in during office hours and go over our work with you, then?" She pauses. "Thanks for doing this. I really appreciate it."

OOC: Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, but yesterday was nuts. And thank God you're not a math geek, because I'm not a medical doctor/biochemist/infectious diseases specialist/whateverthehell Janet is. I pull my science from thin air and vague memories and pray it's reasonably plausible.

"Hey teach," Angelus asked, "do you play poker? Also I'm told to ask if you count cards."

Charlie looked bewildered, not having expected this question at all. "Um, I played it once?"

"Like it at all?" Angelus asked. "I've got a friend who's putting a game together. He asked me to keep my eyes open for anybody who might be interested."

"Oh, sure," Charlie nodded, then smiled suddenly. "Is this an official invite?"

*headdesk* Charlie has the survival instinct of a suicidal moth.

"Not for me to say," Angelus shook his head in polite apology. "It's not my table, I can't dole out the invites. But I can tell my friend you're free Thursday night, leave it up to him?"

Charlie nodded again. "I have, uh, open door thing during the day time, but I should be free after five. My voicemail is working if he wants to leave a message. If I'm in, I mean." He wasn't entirely sure what the policy here was regarding teachers playing poker with their students ~~and cleaning them out~~, but he was lonely, and Angelus, at least, had been both nice and intelligent thus far.

Surely it couldn't hurt?

~~Oh yeah.~~

"I'll pass on the good word," Angelus said. Then, with a coy smile and tone of voice that clearly indicated he didn't care about getting a truthful answer, asked, "Do you? Count cards?"

~~Charlie would so be getting a spanking if Don was here. And, uh, thought about his brother in that way. Which he so does not. At all.~~

"Who doesn't?" Charlie replied a little blankly. Was he expected not to count? Wasn't that a little like expecting him not to breathe?

*cough* Nope. 'Cause that would wrong. and, uh. wrong. yes.

"Got that right, teach," Angelus grinned at him. "I'll pass the word on to my buddy. Name's Logan, just in case he calls."

~~Shame Simon Tam isn't around. Think of the club he could start and Charlie could sponsor. The Special Hell and Why We Like It~~

Charlie grinned back brightly, glad he wasn't being asked to do something impossible.
