As much as he'd enjoyed being on spring break, Sam was glad to be back in the library, and didn't have any trouble getting settled back in after a week away.

Priestly came in not long before closing, moving a bit stiffly.

He'd been considering waiting to see about catching Sam at cheerleading practice, but the library seemed less likely to lead to total mortification if he had to admit what happened last night, so. . . .

"Hey," Sam said, eying Priestly a little as he came in. "What's up?"

Priestly had been trying to work out how to ask this question all day (while busily keeping his head shoved under his pillow, for most of it), but it still lacked . . . polish, and he ended up blurting it out.

"How d'you learn how to fight?"

Sam was a little taken aback by the question - not that it was a strange question, but it wasn't one he expected from Priestly. "Well, it sort of depends on what kind of fighting you want to do."

"Uh." Priestly knew very, very little about fighting. And wasn't quite ready to just go with 'I wanna not get my ass handed to me by a 120 pound girl'. "How many different kinds are there?"

"Well, there's hand-to-hand fighting, fighting with weapons, formalized fighting, wrestling and brawling..." He trailed off, realizing he might be getting carried away. "But I'm going to assume you're asking about kinda simple fighting."

Priestly had no idea. "Yes. Maybe. What?"

Sam smirked a little, and gave his full attention to Priestly. "Why do you want to know about learning how to fight?"

Priestly reached up to rub the back of his neck, only to end up wincing slightly when the move pulled at his sore shoulder. ". . . Seems like something useful to know, around here. . . ."

"There are an awful lot of people with fighting skills here," Sam admitted, watching Priestly carefully. "Are you okay?"

"Fine," Priestly said automatically. "Just kinda . . . wrenched my shoulder a little." He pursed his lips. "What kind of fighting's the best for, like, sparring?"

"Probably basic self-defense," Sam said. "That'd be the best place to start."

Priestly nodded.

Okay, so he'd kinda thought he already knew about that at least. I mean, come on, former football player.

But Dinah had seriously thrown him around.

"So how do I learn that stuff?"

"Well, you could watch videos and stuff," Sam said. "But you're probably better off finding someone to teach you."

Priestly winced. "Well, I guess that's better than starting fights." Which he wouldn't be very good at, anyway. "Still. . . . It's kinda embarrassing."

"It's not that embarrassing. Everyone has to start somewhere," Sam assured him. "I mean, I've had to practice a lot to be able to fight."

Priestly sighed and glanced around. "Yeah? You ever get your butt kicked by a girl?" By his tone, he was clearly pretty sure the answer would be a big fat "no".

"Regular girls? No, but that's mostly because I don't tend to fight girls. It feels kind of weird," Sam admitted.

"Of course not. You could, like, squish 'em." Priestly sighed again. "Dinah asked me to spar with her yesterday. And she kicked my ass. Like. A lot. Really easily. I was trying to make her feel better? But I think she just feels worse. So I gotta learn how to fight."

"Were you holding back to try to let her win so she'd feel better?" Sam asked. "Or was she stronger than you expected?"

"Kind of a little of both? She just . . . knew how to hit. I even tried tackling her and she turned it around so the next thing I knew I was on the floor."

"Maybe she's learned a lot of self defense of her own," Sam said, wanting to try to make Priestly feel better. "If you really want to learn, I could try to show you some moves."

Priestly opened his mouth to explain that Dinah was a freaking superhero, but realized very quickly that that? Was so not his secret to tell. "Uh, yeah, could be. Really? That'd be great, man! I mean, you and Dean have to be good, you're fighting demons and stuff all the time."

Sam shrugged a little, giving in to the automatic need to downplay his skills a little. "Our dad was a Marine, so he knows how to train us."
