"Welcome back," Steve said. "I hope you all enjoyed your break, and that everyone is minus any new regrets and not too horribly sunburnt. Today I'd like to talk about peer pressure. Peer pressure is a terrible thing. You're sitting there, minding your own business, and then your so-called 'friends' tell you 'everyone else is doing it' or 'you'll be a loser if you don't,' and the next thing you know you're wearing a suit that cost more than should ever be spent on clothes and fighting a Nazi made out of bees in the middle of a Las Vegas casino. So it's bad, is what I'm saying. Don't do it. And when people try it on you, whether they're trying to get you to have sex or get a tattoo or buy stupidly expensive clothes or register with the government, tell them to get lost.

"Your assignment for today is to resist peer pressure. You can get into pairs or groups, whatever works well for you, and one of you will resist peer pressure applied by the others, who are trying to convince you to eat a bacon cookie. Have fun."

"Let's," she agreed with a laugh. "After class. And I believe you still owe me some shopping and hair dye, if I could impose on your brotherly goodwill, and now that we are land-locked once more."

"I totally do. When do you want to go?"

"I've class Thursday, and I shall be at work all day Wednesday," she mused. "I would suggest we do unspeakable things to my hair while I am at work, but I suspect if we dye the carpeting, Chad will be very displeased with me. When is it that you're free?"

"I got a class tomorrow, cheerleading on Wednesday, and work on Thursday. And . . . I'm not sure what Lacey would do if I turned the diner into a hair salon. Maybe after P.E. on Friday?"

"It's a date," she beamed. "Of the strictly platonic and sibling variety, that is. Do you suppose I should add braids to my hair? Little ones here and there. They might be interesting."

"Don't see why not. It'd add, I dunno, texture."

"We could dip the ends of the braids in paint," she suggested. "Use them as paintbrushes. Very personal sort of art, that."

"I think one of the surrealists used to do that with his mustache."

"Did he really?" she laughed. "I should suggest that, at our next art club meeting. That everyone begin painting with their hair, or perhaps their elbows."

"Or their toes."

"Elbows, Toes and Hair: A Beginner's Guide to Painting," Alice said. "That would make an excellent how-to sort of book."

"With illustrations. Lots and lots of random, crazy illustrations."
