Library; Monday [ 03/02 ].

Feeling pretty grumpy as he clung to his coffee and open the library, Cal was wondering if they could have their vacation back. Please? Pretty please? With a cherry on top.

Sighing, he resolved to try to stave off the back to school blues by doodling a little more in his notebook and trying to make something out of all his little scribbled spurts of inspiration.

It was a stack of books that hit Cal like a sledgehammer to the brain, wondering if there was something important for class he was being a failure about and completely missing.

"For class?" he asked, starting to check the books out for her.

"For myself," she replied.

Cal instantly relaxed, shoulders sagging. "Good," he said. "I thought maybe I was flipping out on some big project for Jameson's class or something."

And then he paused, his eyebrows a second later going up with interest.

"Really just..researching it for yourself?"

"No, you're fine. This is for my benefit alone," she told him, not quite meeting his eyes.

"Journalism school?" Cal asked. He wondered, briefly, if it was too much to presume, but then he realized that he was already on shaky ground with Amber. What harm could it possibly do?

She nodded. "I'm going to try," she said, frowning a little. "No, no, this is what I'm going to do. I'll make it happen." The last she added more quietly, more to herself.

Don't grin, Stephanides. Don't even think about it...

It required a very firmly set jaw and a swallow, but somehow, Cal managed to keep his face mostly impassive.

"Well," he said.

"Good."

Again, she nodded. It was a good idea. It was more than an idea. Amber didn't have to go home and be a nobody in a trailer park. She could be somebody, working the news beat as she's dreamed of doing. She now had goals, more substantial goals, and they were impressive, to her at least.

She took a deep breath and managed a small, semblance of a smile, though it was directed at the books she was checking out. "Wish me luck." A beat. "You know, for later."

"Why?" Cal asked. "You won't need it."

She looked at him then, and grinned. "Everyone could use a little luck every once in a while, Cal."

"Oh, fine, fine," Cal rolled his eyes, but the action was done with a slight grin. "Good luck, Amber. Just in case you need it."

"Thanks," she said and picked up her books. "See you, Cal."

She headed out, head just a little higher than when she walked in.
