After spending the previous evening drinking, getting into a fight, having quality time in jail, and finding out that Chuck Bass was actually kind of human, Sam was hoping for a quiet day in the library that would be kind to his mild hangover. He was never, ever drinking on a Tuesday night again. Probably.

"Yeah, like I've made a history of ratting you out," Dean said, then rolled his eyes. "Fine, I promise."

Dean was sincere enough for Sam to feel slightly more comfortable, but he still looked pretty nervous about talking. "After Chuck and I had been drinking for a little while, he accidentally insulted this girl. He apologized, but her boyfriend was pissed, so he went after Chuck and...I don't know what I was thinking, but I stopped him and punched him out so he'd leave us alone."

Dean shook his head. "Y'know if someone is begging for it, sometimes Sammy you need to just step aside and let them take it."

"But Chuck wasn't begging for it," Sam said. "The guy was an ass."

"Yeah, well, if Bass is going to go around insulting girls -- what did he say anyway?"

"I don't know, I couldn't hear," Sam said. That wasn't entirely a lie - he hadn't heard the exact conversation, even if he'd managed to pick up bits of it. "But Chuck said it was a misunderstanding."

"Yeah, I don't believe that for a second."

Sam sighed. "Anyway, the guy got pissed when I hit him, obviously, and some people called the cops."

"And you got out of there before the cops arrived?" Dean said hopefully.

Sam looked down at his hands as he shook his head.

Dean sighed heavily. "Sammy, when I said I wanted to see pics of what you were up to when I'm not around, I didn't mean mugshots!"

"It's okay," Sam insisted. "Chuck called his dad and he called their lawyer and all the charges got dropped so it's like nothing happened at all."

Dean made a show of pulling out his cell phone and checking it.

"There was nothing you could have done, even if I'd called you," Sam said.

"I could come and bail you out," Dean said. "Or con you out. Not that you seemed to think I'd want to know and help."

"If Chuck's lawyer hadn't managed to get me out, I would have called you and asked for your help." He didn't tell Dean he didn't need his help. Sam knew better than that.

"You trusted Bass to get you out of that more than me."

"No, that's not it at all. I didn't want you to find out," Sam said. "I didn't want you to get mad that I got into trouble."

"Sammy you do remember the many, many, many conversations we've had about how I've been looking after you my whole life right? How when you get into trouble it's my job to get you out of it? I can't do that if you don't freaking tell me."

"This wasn't exactly regular trouble," Sam pointed out.

"I don't remember ever specifying what kind of trouble I'd be willing to get you out of," dean observed.

"I figured this would be too much. I thought you'd be pissed," Sam said.

"Well, I think you may need to choose your drinking companions a little more carefully, but dude, I ain't going to not bail you out because of that. Figuratively or literally."

"I'm not drinking with Chuck again, that's for sure. We're even now. Neither of us owes the other anything."

"I wanna hit him again," Dean admitted.
