Heroing [Tuesday, period 2, class #5]

"HELLO CLASS!" boomed Captain Hammer, as soon as everyone was assembled in the Danger Shop. "I'm sorry you had to bear on without my presence last week. I had a superhero emergency." In that his cave had flooded, because Captain Hammer had not yet realized that basing his Ham-Lair on the beach wasn't the best idea. "Today... we are learning about the wonders of transportation!"

He passed around a few pictures of his various Ham-vehicles, mostly to show off. They were awesome, after all. "Every hero needs a way to get around. You can't run everywhere. What if you were busy entertaining until the last second, and needed to get somewhere extra-fast? These things," he said sagely, "do happen. So, today, we're going to play pretend!"

Hammer pressed a few buttons, and a small assortment of vehicles -- all state of the art -- appeared, each reasonably far apart from the other, with a small portion of vehicle-appropriate landscape before it. "I put you in pairs, and you're going to go play with one of these, and then report back to the class what you thought. I know both villains and heroes who all use these things! Keep that in mind! Tell us why it worked, and why it didn't. Now, shoo."

[please wait for EXTENSIVE OCD up. ETA: and yes I am aware I marked all the OCD as February 5th. Hush.]

Momoko tilted her head and thought for a moment. "I can row a boat. I guess I could try to row a raft. I guess that's another point against it as a means of transport - you have to know how to make it go?" She climbed carefully onto the raft and carefully made her way over to try to reach the oars.

Romeo followed her, grimacing at the rivulets of water that splashed onto the raft as his weight hit it. "And it certainly wouldn't be much use if you wanted to stay dry."
heromaniac: (argh)

"Hmmm. You're right. And that's not very useful for when we get to the otherside, since our clothes will be soaked and we wouldn't be able to blend into the crowd and get away. If we're bad guys, I mean." She sighed and lifted the oars. Was there anyway to do this and not get wet? "Is there anything good about this? We probably should try to come up with something. I guess if the guy chasing you was allergic to water?"

"Or if they were on horseback, or if there wasn't another way across the river," Romeo nodded. "I'd not choose it if there were alternatives, but if there weren't, one could make due."
heromaniac: (huh what)

"Or if you were actually heading out to a bigger boat that was waiting for you?" Momoko gauged the width of the raft. "Though I still think flying would be easier. Uhm. I don't think I can row this by myself; my arms aren't long enough. I think there would have to be two people to make this one work." She set an oar down, sinking to one knee on a dry spot near the edge. "Can you kneel over there and then grab the oar like this," she held her oar in the air, displaying her grip, "and then pull it through the water like this?" She demonstrated, and the raft shifted slightly.

"I can do that," Romeo nodded eagerly and slowly moved to take the oar and move to the side of the raft. "I shouldn't let you do all the work anyhow, it wasn't very chivalrous of me."

He prodded at the water, and the raft moved a little more.

"I've long ago given up on boys being chivalrous around me," Momoko laughed as the raft moved forward. "That's not it. If this was a normal row boat the sides would be closer and also built-up, so it's like the boat helps you hold the oars. This raft doesn't help at all."

She sighed and pushed her oar through the water again, shaking her head. "You know? As nice and relaxing as this would be for a date, just floating and watching the clouds and the river bank passing by, I don't like it at all for a quick get-away. Or a chase and capture. I mean, even if we do catch up to anyone, how do we stay caught up with them and grab them? And then get them back to land?"
withoutverona: (Not quite certain)

"Boomerangs to knock them into the water," Romeo said, completely deadpan. The water was harder to row in than he liked, and he frowned a little in concentration. "I don't know, maybe they could be like raft bumper cars, and we ram the other raft until they fall off into the water."

"And boys should be chivalrous around you."
heromaniac: (oh yeah!)

"Whoa! That's a cool idea!" And she was perfectly serious. If she was sure the raft would stay steady, she'd be bouncing at the image. "Boomerangs and bumpercars! Hmm. I wonder if that would work? But then we'd have to fish them out, too, so maybe industrial strength fishing poles? Or nets? Could we balance well enough on this raft to do that though? Hmm." Momoko pulled her oar and frowned in thought. "And of course, they should be, but where I'm from boys are only chivalrous with their girlfriends, or at least with girls they like. Are things that different where you're from?"
