When the Ethics class arrived in the Danger Shop, they stepped into an entirely different world.

An incredibly dry, hot one. That smelled really bad.

Anakin waved his hand around the room. "Welcome to the embodiment of gluttony," he said, "the palace of a Hutt."

He concentrated on the controls on the far side of the room, and the simulation sprung to life: dozens of beings drinking, eating, and dancing, with all activity centered around a vile slug of a beast laying on the raised dais at the front of the room.

In a place of honor on the wall was a man, face twisted in a silent scream but his features obscured beyond recognition, encased in silver. Anakin ignored it as he walked past to point at the creature on the dais. "That," he said, nose wrinkling in disgust, "is a Hutt. This particular version was named Jabba, one of the most powerful crime lords in the galaxy." A grim smile turned the corners of his mouth up. "At least until he met my children."

He shook his head. "That is neither here nor there. Today is an interactive experience for you, class. Take a good hard look around. See the effects that gluttony can have."

His eyes went flat. "Touch any of the dancing girls and you'll regret it. That's a promise."

Anakin grinned. "It's always reassuring to be able to fight your way out of whatever problem your mouth gets you into. I spent most of my life doing that. I'm a horrible diplomat."

"I only fight if necessary, but according to my stepmother my diplomatic skills need to be improved if I am to be a good emperor," Leto told him, now looking quite uneasy.

Anakin twitched. "I used to serve an emperor."

"A good one?" Leto asked. "Most days I think I'd rather not be one. Not that i have much of a choice."

"He was a disaster and ruined the galaxy before I finally killed him," Anakin said, then looked appalled at himself. "Why don't you have a choice?"

"Then killing him was the right choice," Leto replied. "And I am my father's heir. I need to finish what he started, although how I don't know. But sometimes I have visions and they frighten me." Leto's face grew white, and he stepped backwards.

Anakin's eyes locked on Leto's. "No need to be afraid," he said softly.

"You don't know that," Leto protested. "You don't know what might have to be done."

[bedtime!]

"I know that nothing in the future is certain," Anakin said, "and I know that freaking out about visions you don't like has never once stopped the horrible thing from happening."

"To see the future is to be trapped by it," Leto said. "My father had prescient vision. I want to escape that trap."

"What did he see?" Anakin asked.

Leto looked straight at Anakin. "Jacarutu," he said, then quickly spun around and walked out of the room.

Anakin watched Leto leave and wondered if he should ask Ghanima about any of this.
