Food Appreciation [Class Four, Period #3]

Marshall was just kind of staring at everybody when class started. He didn't look angry or anything. He was just staring, maybe looking a bit worried.

"I'M AFRAID TO TALK TO EVERYBODY TODAY," he said suddenly. "So far today I told a radio squirrel that if I were another squirrel I'd totally tap that and I told Ted that I didn't really mind his red cowboy boots!"

Ignore the fact that nobody here knew who Ted was.

"What if I start doing lecture and I suddenly start talking about how I think Kaylee's little accent is about the cutest thing I've ever heard and how that sometimes I want to ruffle Sam's hair because it looks fun?" Marshall's eyes widened. "Oh god, I'm doing it already!"

He pointed at the buffet table which had all sorts of ~~moddable~~ sandwiches and subs on them.

"Sandwiches! They're delicious and easy to make! Eat them!" Marshall said. "And for the love of god, someone save me from myself!"

Claudia made herself an enormous sandwich. "Oh, Lord I love my metabolism," she said with a grin.

"I love your metabolism, too," Priestly said.

Oh hell, why couldn't he keep his mouth shut?

"I had this friend who was always going on and on and on about how eating organic vegan boring food was the only way to look good. I eat crap and look at me!"

It was very possible she would've said this anyway, yes.

"Organic and vegan food doesn't have to be boring. And I do look at you. All the time. And I like your outfits, but I'm usually imagining how you'd look without them on."

Priestly's eyes went wide and he tried to cram six inches of turkey sub into his mouth at one time.

Claudia's eyebrows rose. "Even when Dean's girlfriend seems to spend all her spare time throwing herself at you?"

"I'm pretty sure that's mostly the girly version of a guy wanting a threeway with twins," Priestly pointed out. "And I'd really rather someone wanted me for, you know, me."

"I want you for you. I'm not trying to collect all the guys that look like you," Claudia said, then looked mortified and clapped her hand over her mouth.

"I want you for you, too. I think you're completely awesome. But I'm scared to do anything about it because all the girls at my old school just wanted to get with the hot football player and didn't give a shit about me or completely rejected me because I had funny colored hair."

"The girls at your last school were idiots," Claudia said firmly, stepping closer. "You are soooo much more interesting than the football players. And your hair is awesome."

"I used to be a football player," Priestly admitted. "It sucked." He shrugged. "Now I'm a cheerleader instead."

"You're a cheerleader? But I guess the girls here might not all be stuck-up sluts like my last school...unless that's why you wanted to join and omigod why can't I stop talking?"

"I don't know! But there's a bunch of guys on the team and I think they only picked me because I was the only new person to sign up to try out or something."

"Do I need to learn to like sports now?" Claudia asked, looking a little worried. "Because that was Kristy's thing and I'm pretty sure she was a lesbian."

"You do realize those two things don't have to be connected, right? Besides, I don't think this school has any actual sports teams. The cheerleaders just kinda cheer for the sake of cheering, which is totally awesome because it's kind of metaphysical, you know?"

"I'm pretty sure I don't know what that word means," Claudia admitted.

"I'm actually not sure, either, but it's really deep. And possibly has something to do with mirrors."

"Oh, good," Claudia said, looking relieved. "I don't like feeling dumb, and it happens a lot."

"You're not dumb, you're just kind of a ditz."

Oh crap.

Claudia looked stung. "Ow."

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, but you are." Crap! "But it's cute! And holy mother of god I'm really pretty sure that calling the girl you like a ditz is not part of working up the guts to ask her out."

She wrapped her arms around herself and focused on the part of that sentence she wanted to hear. "Ask her out?"

"Don't worry. I know I've probably ruined any chance I've got of getting a yes."

Yeah, Priestly kinda sucked at this.

"You probably should have, yes, but I think all the other boys are afraid of me," Claudia said, "and I don't want to be a loser!"

"You think you're gonna be a loser?"

"I don't want to go to college and I'm not that smart and I don't know who's going to buy my art and I'm going to end up working at McDonald's!" Claudia wailed. "Oh, Lord. I didn't mean to say that."
