Food Appreciation [Class Four, Period #3]

Marshall was just kind of staring at everybody when class started. He didn't look angry or anything. He was just staring, maybe looking a bit worried.

"I'M AFRAID TO TALK TO EVERYBODY TODAY," he said suddenly. "So far today I told a radio squirrel that if I were another squirrel I'd totally tap that and I told Ted that I didn't really mind his red cowboy boots!"

Ignore the fact that nobody here knew who Ted was.

"What if I start doing lecture and I suddenly start talking about how I think Kaylee's little accent is about the cutest thing I've ever heard and how that sometimes I want to ruffle Sam's hair because it looks fun?" Marshall's eyes widened. "Oh god, I'm doing it already!"

He pointed at the buffet table which had all sorts of ~~moddable~~ sandwiches and subs on them.

"Sandwiches! They're delicious and easy to make! Eat them!" Marshall said. "And for the love of god, someone save me from myself!"

Woah. On the other hand, they were past the dating part of the conversation, which meant Priestly didn't have to be operating in panic mode any more. Yay!

"Lots of people don't go to college and don't end up working at McDonald's," Priestly pointed out helpfully. "But the economy kind of sucks for trying to be an artist right now. Maybe you could do commercial art?"

"Commercial art?" Claudia repeated.

"Like ads and logos and stuff."

"Would someone check my spelling?"

"Pretty sure, yeah. Or give you a piece of paper showing exactly how they want it spelled."

"Oh, good," Claudia said. "Because I've managed to misspell the street I've lived on my entire life."

Way to impress him, Claudia.

"Maybe you're dyslexic?"

"~~Ooh, we didn't have that in 1986~~ Maybe?" she said.

"I bet you could get tested for it or something? I have no idea how you'd go about doing it, though. It doesn't mean you're dumb, it just means your brain's wired a little weird."

"Everyone knows that," Claudia said with a self-conscious little laugh.

Priestly rubbed the back of his neck, feeling foolish. "Sorry. I mean, you're from, like, when I was born, I'm never sure what they had back then or not."

"No, that my brain doesn't work like everyone else's," Claudia said, flailing. "I've never even heard of ducklecca before."

"Dyslexia. It's a learning disorder."

Claudia hid her face behind her hands. "Great. Now I sound like a moron, too."

"No, no, no, that's what I'm trying to say. Lots of smart people have learning disorders. It doesn't mean you're dumb."

"You're sure?" she asked eagerly. "Because my IQ checked out the same as my genius sister. Everyone just figured the test was wrong."

"Sure, I'm sure. And that's totally dumb. Just because you're not good at one thing doesn't mean you can't be really smart at other stuff."

Claudia's whole face lit up. "Thank you!" She bounced close enough to try to give him a hug.

Priestly was totally down with getting a hug from a pretty girl. And the fact that she wasn't going to hold him calling her a ditz against him.

Claudia wasn't one to hold a grudge when it didn't suit her. Dean's girlfriend might have to watch out. Priestly? Nah.

"Man, this is so much better than it'd probably have gone if I tried to ask you out. Goddammit, why can't I shut up?!"

"I don't know," Claudia said, "but you should definitely try asking me out some time. Really."

"Really? 'Cause I suck at it. I freak out and I over think it and I decide the girl's just gonna think I'm dumb or only like me 'cause I played football or --" He snapped his mouth shut. "You see?"

"Yeah, you're kind of terrible at it," Claudia said. "Maybe a note? Or you can leave a message on my machine and practice beforehand. But if you keep hanging up, I'm going to get unhappy. I'm totally going to say yes if that helps."

Priestly grinned. "It does. It totally does."
