Food Appreciation [Class Four, Period #3]

Marshall was just kind of staring at everybody when class started. He didn't look angry or anything. He was just staring, maybe looking a bit worried.

"I'M AFRAID TO TALK TO EVERYBODY TODAY," he said suddenly. "So far today I told a radio squirrel that if I were another squirrel I'd totally tap that and I told Ted that I didn't really mind his red cowboy boots!"

Ignore the fact that nobody here knew who Ted was.

"What if I start doing lecture and I suddenly start talking about how I think Kaylee's little accent is about the cutest thing I've ever heard and how that sometimes I want to ruffle Sam's hair because it looks fun?" Marshall's eyes widened. "Oh god, I'm doing it already!"

He pointed at the buffet table which had all sorts of ~~moddable~~ sandwiches and subs on them.

"Sandwiches! They're delicious and easy to make! Eat them!" Marshall said. "And for the love of god, someone save me from myself!"

"Oh, this is going to be weird," groaned Hoshi.

"Everything on this island is weird. There's a talking frog for a student."

"Oh, Robin? He's a sweetie. We went to homecoming together once. Nice guy. He really seemed to like me, but I just wasn't feeling any sparks there, you know? We were better off as friends anyway, and -- why am I talking about this?" said Hoshi before clapping one hand over her mouth.

"You went to homecoming with a frog?!"

"I did! You see, I didn't want to go at all because I was scared of large crowds, but all these guys kept asking me. So I finally said yes to Robin because he seemed the least scary option!" Hoshi blurted out.

"You're that afraid of dating?"

"Yes! I mean, I've never gotten to talk to other people outside of family before. And it's not like my mom and dad covered relationships when they home-schooled me. I mean, they barely even spoke to each other! Just trying to talk to other people was tough for a while until I got used to it, and there were times I had to fall back on my first lessons in conversational English just to get through it," Hoshi rambled for a moment, then stopped.

"Wow, and I thought growing up with my parents was fucked up."

"Did your parents decide to home-school you because they thought that you were a super-genius?" asked Hoshi.

"No. They decided to send me away because they were ashamed of who I was becoming."

"What is wrong with them? I think you're perfectly wonderful and if they can't see it, they're blind," said Hoshi.

Priestly grinned. "Thanks! I think you're pretty cool, too. Taking a frog to a dance takes guts."

"Thanks," said Hoshi. "Actually, Valentine's Day last year took a lot more guts. I managed to actually ask out a boy I liked, then I found out from someone else that another friend liked him and she was furious with me."

"That's dumb. She shoulda been happy for you to get the guts up."

"Yeah, well, she certainly..."

This time, Hoshi managed to cover her mouth before saying what she really thought about the situation.

"Oooo, near verbal cat fight! Don't stop there!"

"Mmmm hmmm mmm hmmm." Hoshi didn't stop talking, but she managed to keep her hand over her mouth. She didn't want any of those tricky squirrels to pick up on what she was saying.

"Is that some obscure language?" Priestly teased. Mostly. "I mean, I'm pretty sure it's not, but you never know."

"No, it's not some obscure language, just an attempt to keep a ninja from potentially coming after me," said Hoshi. "It's water under the bridge these days. The guy left Fandom and she's dating someone else anyway."

"Are you interested in anyone else, these days?"

No, this was not a question Hoshi wanted to hear today, not under the circumstances.

"Yes! Yes, I'm definitely interested in other guys these days. Very definitely..."

Priestly grinned. Yeah, he knew what he was doing, and he knew it made him an asshole. But he just couldn't help himself. "Any guy in particular?"

Why hadn't she just kept her mouth shut? Hoshi closed her eyes and tried to think of something distracting, like Latin verb forms. Veni, vidi, vici...

"You!" she squeaked. "I mean, that kiss on Friday was really something else... Oh my god, why I am I even saying this?

Priestly blushed. Hard. He hadn't been expecting that.

"Oh crap," he said eloquently.

Yeah, so not the reaction she wanted to hear.

"But I'm not looking for anything. I mean, who needs commitment, right? Definitely not me, since I'll probably be going home for good so I can join Starfleet after this semester. So it's not worth dating someone when I'll never see them again," Hoshi babbled on.
