Food Appreciation [Class Four, Period #3]

Marshall was just kind of staring at everybody when class started. He didn't look angry or anything. He was just staring, maybe looking a bit worried.

A little more staring.

"I'M AFRAID TO TALK TO EVERYBODY TODAY," he said suddenly. "So far today I told a radio squirrel that if I were another squirrel I'd totally tap that and I told Ted that I didn't really mind his red cowboy boots!"

Ignore the fact that nobody here knew who Ted was.

"What if I start doing lecture and I suddenly start talking about how I think Kaylee's little accent is about the cutest thing I've ever heard and how that sometimes I want to ruffle Sam's hair because it looks fun?" Marshall's eyes widened. "Oh god, I'm doing it already!"

He pointed at the buffet table which had all sorts of ~~moddable~~ sandwiches and subs on them.

"Sandwiches! They're delicious and easy to make! Eat them!" Marshall said. "And for the love of god, someone save me from myself!"

"That's dumb. She shoulda been happy for you to get the guts up."

"Yeah, well, she certainly..."

This time, Hoshi managed to cover her mouth before saying what she really thought about the situation.

"Oooo, near verbal cat fight! Don't stop there!"

"Mmmm hmmm mmm hmmm." Hoshi didn't stop talking, but she managed to keep her hand over her mouth. She didn't want any of those tricky squirrels to pick up on what she was saying.

"Is that some obscure language?" Priestly teased. Mostly. "I mean, I'm pretty sure it's not, but you never know."

"No, it's not some obscure language, just an attempt to keep a ninja from potentially coming after me," said Hoshi. "It's water under the bridge these days. The guy left Fandom and she's dating someone else anyway."

"Are you interested in anyone else, these days?"

No, this was not a question Hoshi wanted to hear today, not under the circumstances.

"Yes! Yes, I'm definitely interested in other guys these days. Very definitely..."

Priestly grinned. Yeah, he knew what he was doing, and he knew it made him an asshole. But he just couldn't help himself. "Any guy in particular?"

Why hadn't she just kept her mouth shut? Hoshi closed her eyes and tried to think of something distracting, like Latin verb forms. Veni, vidi, vici...

"You!" she squeaked. "I mean, that kiss on Friday was really something else... Oh my god, why I am I even saying this?

Priestly blushed. Hard. He hadn't been expecting that.

"Oh crap," he said eloquently.

Yeah, so not the reaction she wanted to hear.

"But I'm not looking for anything. I mean, who needs commitment, right? Definitely not me, since I'll probably be going home for good so I can join Starfleet after this semester. So it's not worth dating someone when I'll never see them again," Hoshi babbled on.

"I actually totally want commitment." Oh crap oh crap oh crap! Change the subject! "What's Starfleet?"

"But you said on Friday that you didn't want commitment," said Hoshi, confused. "And Starfleet is a space exploration organization back home. They're getting ready to launch a deep-space exploration vessel and I have a good shot at becoming their communication officer."

"Yeah, because drunken teenage guys never lie about things like that to get to kiss a bunch of girls," Priestly pointed out. "You're going to space?"

"Yup! I'm from 140 years in the future, so space exploration is about to become a really big thing where I come from," said Hoshi. "I already know the captain of the first ship. He really likes me. He even gave me his dog to take care of while he was deployed elsewhere."

"So you're an intergalactic dog sitter?" Priestly was confused. Which, considering his roommate was from space, was actually a little sad.

"Basically, yeah," said Hoshi. "I mean, I'm sure Captain Archer thinks I'm a more than just a dog sitter. He's really impressed with my linguistic skills."

"And dog sitting."

"And my dog sitting, so he can go live with some stupid waitress who's allergic to dogs so she's totally not the right person for him," said Hoshi, wincing. "Ugh, why the heck am I even talking about this?"

"You totally have a crush on him, don't you."

There was no getting out of this one.

"I adore him," said Hoshi. "I had a crush on him long before I even met him, and he turned out to be even more wonderful than I could ever imagine. You know what? He even came to see me last semester when my parents couldn't make it for Parents Weekend."

Priestly smiled. "That's sweet! A sort of 'crush on your father figure' kind of thing. I kind of do that, too, except I won't admit it because Trucker's a guy and I'm pretty sure I'm not gay. It's more of a personality crush thing, really."

"It's not just a 'crush on a father figure' kind of thing!" Hoshi protested. "Even if he's twice my age, and he's got a girlfriend, and he's about to become my commanding officer so he can't-- well, maybe it is like that."

"There's nothing wrong with it."
