Claudia, in celebration of the lights being back on in the library, was wearing one of her brightest outfits: pink (pinkpinkpinkpink) tights under a green plaid miniskirt, a turquoise button-down shirt over a tan cropped tank top. Her boots were shiny and black, and her hair was tucked up under a bright orange beret. On anyone else, the outfit would make the baby Jesus cry. On Claudia, it looked great.

She dropped three bags of Twizzlers onto the top of the counter before settling down with a fashion magazine.

Claudia smiled. "I took health last semester," she said. "Have they gotten to the icky videos of births yet?"

"Nope, mostly he seems to be concentrating on stuff we could catch from each other," she said, making a little face.

"Ew," Claudia said with feeling. "That's what condoms are for. And having standards."

"People keep trying to get me to date. I just don't know what to tell them when they ask why I don't," Sookie said dryly.

"There are a couple of options," Claudia told her. "You can say you're super religious. You can make up a fake boyfriend at home who's a Marine and totally the jealous type. Or you can tell them it's none of their business."

Or she could tell the truth, but Sookie suspected that Claudia might not deal well with that. So she decided to feel her out a little, lowering her mental shields so she could get a better feel for what she was working with. "Yeah. And I could tell them something totally crazy, too, right? Because this place is so weird."

See, she could be sneaky.

"You totally could," Claudia said, her mind a completely harmless mix of advice she'd picked up from Cosmo and Oprah. "I've met two people our age who are already engaged! It's insane!"

"Yeah?" Okay, that was really weird, but still. And being around Claudia was kind of like being around Toby or JB. Very relaxing. "I mean, I keep meeting people from, you know, space and stuff. Nothing here's too weird to use an excuse."

Claudia nodded wisely. "My roommate--do you know Zayne?--says he's from space." Claudia totally thought he was still on drugs. Drugs from space, but drugs.

"Probably is," Sookie said gently, shrugging. "Lots of people here can do weird stuff, and are from weird places. He isn't on drugs."

And now she'd wait and see if Claudia noticed she'd picked that out of her head.

"Are you sure? Because he was lifting stuff with his mind, or so he said and I figured that he was so high that I must be hallucinating too," Claudia babbled along before pausing. "Did I say the drug thing out loud?"

"Um. No," Sookie said slowly, and bit her lip. "I'm not on drugs either. I can read your mind."

Since Claudia seemed to be in the minority, as far as thinking this was abnormal, Sookie was a little bit worried about telling her. But she'd probably find out soon, anyway.

No way, Claudia thought.

"No way!" she said aloud. "You can hear everything?"

Not that most of Claudia's thoughts weren't immediately verbalized.

"Unless I try not to," she admitted. "And it's not like most people's thoughts are coherent sentences. Um, a lot of people think in pictures." She smiled. "Yours are very colorful."

Claudia smiled back a little nervously. "They are?"

"I try to stay out of people's heads, don't worry," Sookie reassured her. "But I can't always help it. But you're nice to be around, 'cause you don't really have a lot of, um, secrets?"

She lowered her voice. "I met so many guys back home who were cheating on their wives, or who borrowed their pumps and stockings when they were out of town, and I had to listen to that."

"Oh Lord, ew," Claudia said. "Your poor head!" She frowned as ~~the tiny hamster wheel in her head started turning~~ a thought struck her. "Is that why you don't date? Because high school boys are total pigs?"

"Imagine if you could hear every time a guy admired your figure," she said, nodding. "Or thought about what he'd like to do. Or criticized you."

"I'd spend a lot of time slapping guys," Claudia said wisely.

"And that's why I don't date," she said simply, shrugging. "Toby's going to look out for cute boys who think nice thoughts, but I don't know."

"Are there boys who don't think any thoughts?" Claudia asked. "Like...really dumb but pretty?"

"I know one of those at home," she noted, "but what would we talk about?"

Claudia grinned impishly. "You don't have to talk," she said, "but yeah, I'll admit that it helps."

"Well, no, but...." Sookie blushed. "I mean, talking is better than...not talking."

That made sense.

"Than sitting there awkwardly in a restaurant? Definitely," Claudia replied.
