Heroing 101 [Wednesday, period 2, class #4]

There was no Hammer today. Instead, a blonde woman in very little clothing with a whole lot of cleavage stood at the front of the classroom. Some may see similarities in the face to another blonde who seemed to be missing from class, but only if they were looking at her face. "Hello, friends. My name is She-Ra. Your teacher was unavailable today and asked me to speak with you in his stead about a topic very dear to my heart." Which she touched because it was the literal thing to do as she walked the floor before them.

"Diplomacy. The art of dealing with your nemesis when he is at his weakest. You've fought and won the battle but tell me, what now? Do you destroy your enemy when he has no ability to defend himself? Do you allow him to live out his life in jail, which he is likely to break out of given past attempts at incarceration? Or do you set him free, allowing your compassion and hope for a brighter future to set an example to him?" She paused allowing the students to consider the options she'd provided. "Is there another alternative? Let's discuss what you would do, as super heroes fighting super villains."

"Jail," Hannibal answered. "Unless there's a viable threat to you and your people where you have to kill him but, if not, jail. If you let him go without any sort of punishment, he'll just think he can get away with it because the hero's compassionate."

"Jail is certainly an option in most cases," She-Ra nodded. "But what happens when your criminal escapes or better yet, is sorry for his crime and promises to be good?"

"Destroy," Romeo said firmly, once his upstairs brain finally kicked in. "Destroy and don't look back. You can't give your enemy a chance to rise again, and he would do the same."

Helen shrugged. "When we faced Them, we killed those we could and chased the rest out of the worlds in such a way that they could never return."

"Sending them home sounds quite ideal," She-Ra replied with a smile. "However, taking a life in exchange for a crime?" It was sort of stunning her that so many had this response.

"I guess it would depend on what they were doing," Jess said. "If I caught them robbing banks or something not physically harmful, I'd probably let them go to jail."

"Would there be a time limit on their sentence? How much time away from their life rights the crime they committed? What if they feel remorse for their crime?" She-Ra was big on just asking a ton of questions and letting them stew.

"Well," Dor said looking at his desk. And only his desk. "Historically when we deal with an opponent we usually offer the person to swear their loyalty to the king or they have the option of being exiled."

"That depends," She-Ra replied. "Evil can range from a liar to someone hell-bent on the destruction of a world. However, each could repent and feel sorrow for the crime they committed. What then?"

"Let me make sure I understand this," Anemone said slowly. "There's been 'past attempts' at incarceration, indicating he's done all this before. The previous tries at locking him up didn't work, and there's no indication that he plans to change. Right?"

"That is one take on a potential nemesis in question," She-Ra confirmed.

"I want to think that people can be rehabilitated," Warren said, still speaking toward his desk. "But it really does depend on the situation. The person you're setting free might go on to do the same thing again. But if you just end their life in cold blood, there's no taking that back."

He hated this class. Hated it just like he hated everything else.

"Lock him up. It might take three lifetimes, but if there's a chance there's something in there worth saving, it might be worth it."

"I appreciate your thoughts on this, Warren," She-Ra replied, noting he was speaking to the desk. "Having faith that you can help people see that what they're doing is wrong takes a lot." She should know.

"Well," Robin said thoughtfully. He wanted to do well today because he liked the teacher so much. "I don't know if you could just let him go. There'd have to be some way to make sure he didn't do whatever he did again. Maybe there's some kind of community service program? Try to make friends?" Hey lots of Super Villains reformed and became heroes in the comics.

"If they've broken the law, you can't set them free because they still have to pay for their crime against society so you can't just let them go." Momoko pondered the question. "And by that same token, you have to trust the law to work properly and that the criminal will be assigned the proper punishment which isn't really part of my job except that the really bad" annoying "ones most often end up back on the streets for me to catch again."

She sighed. "But as a superhero of justice, I have to follow the law myself and trust that the law will do what's right with the criminal that I've helped capture."
