Library [01/21]

Sam wasn't about to let a little power outage keep him out of the library. After all, without television or other entertaining electronics, the odds of someone coming in to get a book was a lot higher. At least, that was Sam's hope.

The windows in the library gave him enough light to get by, but he still had flashlights at the desk. A little extra light by which to read was never a bad thing.

Yep, Priestly was bored. And the library was way closer to the dorms than the town was. Sam had told him once to swing by sometime, so he decided he'd do just that.

He was probably even wearing some clever t-shirt. Not that you could see it under the layers of flannel shirt and canvas jacket. Hell, barring facial hair, piercings, and mohawk, he probably looked more like Dean than ever. . . .

"Hey, man. How's it going?"

It still gave Sam a bit of a jolt to see Priestly sometimes, but he thought he was getting better at it.

"Hey. I'm doing all right," he said. "How are you holding up?"

"I'm good." Priestly shrugged. "Well, I'll be better when it warms up around here. It . . . does warm up around here, right?"

"Oh yeah, we have plenty of warm weather," Sam said. "By the time summer rolls around, you'll be wishing for snow again."

"I doubt that." Priestly really wasn't a fan of this 'snow' business. Santa Cruz may not be a constant tropical paradise, but it was at least almost always above freezing out. "Especially not if it usually comes with power outtages."

"Yeah, we usually don't have problems with the power," Sam admitted. "But I'm sure it'll get fixed soon. There's too many of us for them to just leave it and wait for it to fix itself."

Priestly considered this. "Maybe the power went on strike. Like the washing machines and coffee and shit."

"I haven't seen any fliers, but that's entirely possible," he said, smirking. "You sound like you're adjusting well to the weirdness."

Sam laughed. "You might be going insane, but I doubt it would be because of the washing machines, unless you saw a few too many people in their underwear."

"Dude, no such thing." Priestly grinned. "But you never know, they could have put something . . . extra in the clothes they returned."

"Did you ever go through anything this weird at home?" Sam asked. "Some people have, and worse, so I never know."

"The kind of weird you fit into well?" Sam said, taking a pointed glance at Priestly's hair.

Priestly shrugged, grinning. "Well, there's still a pretty big khaki brigade, and most of the rest of 'em are hippies, but some people dig the style, yeah."

"Oh, hippies are a whole different kind of weird," Sam said. "One I'm glad I don't run into a lot."

"I don't mean the nice 'let's be friendly to everyone and save the world' kind of hippie," Sam said quickly. "But the scary 'let's do drugs and see what we can hallucinate today' kind? That's a different story."

"Can't you expand your mind without the drugs?" Sam asked. God, he was such a nerd sometimes.

"Yeah, sure. I figure you mostly just gotta want to, you know? But the whole hippie theory is that the drugs allow you to look at the world from a completely different perspective and open you up to some . . . inexplicable source of spiritual knowledge or something. It's a tool."

Priestly wasn't so much a nerd as fascinated with Timothy Leary.

"I think I'm going to go ahead and take your word for that, since you sound like you know what you're talking about," Sam said. "And because I like my own perspective just fine."

"Nah, just friends with a hippie who likes to explain things," Priestly said brightly. "I'd be kinda interested to try LSD maybe once, though. You know, see what all the hype's about."

"You'd be safe about it though, right?" Sam asked. As safe as one could be with that kind of drug, at least.

Priestly smirked. "Well, I was thinking of buying it from a skeezy looking guy on the street, taking at least four times the recommended dosage along with several other unknown substances and then going for a walk along the wrong side of a bridge guardrail. . . ."
