The Library

Janet unlocked the library and walked in, setting her laptop down warily behind the desk and trying not to think about Hathor the last time she was in here. She took a drink from her extra-large mug of coffee and started working.

ETA: She popped out a moment later and stuck a note up on the door: "New teachers need to check out the Rules of Conduct and fill out a library card application in blue or black ink, damn it. Please come inside for a form. Thank you."

"Not awful at all, Park," Angelus leaned forward even more, motioning for her to come closer as though sharing a secret. "'cause, here's the thing: That curse? Doesn't do a damned thing to me. All it does is make people stupid enough to believe that Angel's somebody safe to be around.

"But he's not, though," Angelus said. "Because deep down inside, there I am. Whispering in his ear. Reminding him of all the horrible things he'd love to do and how they make him so hot and so hard until one day he can't stand it and - " Angelus snapped his fingers. "Ooops. There goes that pesky hotel filled with innocents. Hyperion, by the way. You can look that up too.

"So go ahead," Angelus shrugged. "Soul me. Heck, maybe doing so is all a part of my evil evil plans. Assuming I have evil plans. I'm a busy guy. Hard to keep track."

Parker sighed. "You make my head hurt. Truth and lies, and we both know the best lies are the truth."

Disgusted, she backed away a step, then straightened. "Do I look like the shining knight? The hero? The good witch? Why are we having this conversation? You've offered the carrot: join you and know all. And frankly, it's got the appeal of a moldy turnip. If the stick is just the threat that I'll be waving to you through the prison of soul bars, waiting to kill me-- well, that's not new."

"So congratulations, you got what you wanted with the election. Way to go, you're so smart. Fooooooled me. Oh, no, you know I'd like to curse your ass to the horizon. So what?"

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Join me?" Angelus shrugged. "I wasn't offering that. Park, I really am being honest. I like your brain. I'd have liked it more if that fuckup with the ad had been a deliberate ploy but you're young, nothing wrong with that."

He smiled at her. "I just wanted to talk is all. You were so interested in me it seemed a shame not to at least say hi."

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Hi." Parker bared her teeth.

"And the brain? Is not to be served with a nice Chianti. I think we've said it all, don't you?"

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Park, if I wanted you dead you'd know that by the floor being painted a new color called 'inside of Parker's spleen'," Angelus smiled, friendly as anything. "But I don't do that anymore. I'm reformed. Fandom High is a new slate, and I intend to take full advantage of my chance to be one of the good guys."

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Parker slowly clapped, eyes wide. "And the Oscar for gee-shucks charm and amazing bullshit ability goes to.... Right. You know, I grew up with bullies and psychos. And I actually believe you want me alive." The smile disappeared. "So this does not reassure me. At all."

"So sorry your guys lost the election. And on some level? I actually mean that." Parker picks up a book and finds what she's looking for. "In all fighting, the direct method may be used for joining battle, but indirect methods will be needed in order to secure victory." Flipping it shut, she says, "Round one to you. Whatever it was about. Take your time coming out of your corner for the next one."

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"See?" Angelus said, pointing at her. "Moxie. I like that, I really do. Won't say I wouldn't rather you and me were on the same side, but if you don't want to be I like that you at least provide a challenge. Anyway, the thing to remember is - "

Angelus stopped, distracted by something that he saw on one of the open magazines in front of him. He pulled it towards him, so distracted that he didn't even drop the other hand that was still hanging in the air. He did lift the magazine up, though, which blocked Parker's view of what it was he was looking at.

Softer, his voice more distant, he asked, "Can I borrow this?"

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. Whaaaa? Parker blinked, feeling the whiplash of surprise, then said, "It's library. If you've got a card, you can check it out. It has to come back, though...." She tilted her head, trying to at least see which magazine has him so interested.

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
"I - uh - don't," Angelus said, finally dropping his hand down to hold the magazine with both hands. It was one of any number of tabloids that someone had left spread out on the table before he'd gotten there. "What's the fine on destroying a magazine?"

[ooc: Giving you this moment on a silver platter, btw, as thanks for putting up with his monologuing ;) ]

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Parker noted the title, and took a step back. "We can get you a card," the surreality was becoming stronger, but so were the screaming of her instincts. Another step back. "And the fine is usually up to Dr. Pierson, something like replacement cost--"

[ooc: gracias and de nada, right back atcha]

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Angelus flipped the magazine closed. He checked the price: $4.95. He stood up, reached into his back pants pocket, pulled out his wallet, and dropped down a twenty.

"There, keep the change," he said. He folded up the magazine and put it into an inner coat pocket. His demeaner was scattered, as though the mind that had previously been so keenly on Parker was now worlds away. "I got someplace I gotta go. See ya."

[ooc: It's a shame we can't bring them together more often. He really does like her. Oh, and anybody with half a brain who looked at the list of people Angelus hangs out with would be able to figure out whose name was most likely mentioned in a tabloid.]

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
"...the hell was that?" Parker said aloud. One minute, Bond villain glee; the next, gone. She looked at the magazines spread across the table, and shook her head. Tabloids. Not Fandom High tabloids, but the Star, the Sun-- what would've been in....

Her eyes narrowed. "Echolls."

[ooc: Hope I got it right. *laugh* I get that he likes her, and I think she gets it too-- but she's contrary, and it makes her distrust him more. Really too bad we can't get them in more scenes!]

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
[ooc: Yup, you got it right. He's does have his moments of lacking in subtlety. Poor, stupid, pretentious vamp.

Depending on how things go he might start saying hi to her more often. In his world just because you hate and distrust somebody doesn't mean you can't stop and chat. Just take him and Darla, for instance.]

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
[ooc: Well, brava on this. I think I missed some cues, but damn, you do good bad vamp.

Oh, that'll thrill her. *laugh*]

[identity profile] notstakedyet.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
[ooc: She's his new best friend! ;) Nah, he actually sees a lot of potential in her. Not to corrupt b/c she doesn't hit his corrupting kinks, but just because she's got a brain. He loves smart. It makes him happy.

And thank you! You give good Parker, who is in a catagory all her own. =) ]

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2005-10-12 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
[ooc: Yeah, she's already way past innocent at this point. And hunh. Interesting take on it. *snerk*

And thanks and bows!]
