The Library

Janet unlocked the library and walked in, setting her laptop down warily behind the desk and trying not to think about Hathor the last time she was in here. She took a drink from her extra-large mug of coffee and started working.

ETA: She popped out a moment later and stuck a note up on the door: "New teachers need to check out the Rules of Conduct and fill out a library card application in blue or black ink, damn it. Please come inside for a form. Thank you."

"Parker," says Janet firmly. "Blackened lungs. Diseased, hacking coughs spotted with blood because you're coughing up bits of tissue. Having to carry around an oxygen tank." She pauses. "The hell of trying to find a designer oxygen tank. How about you try to cure the ulcer the old-fashioned way by dealing with the causes?"

"Oh, fine. Bring out the gross imagery, be a doctor about it." Parker sulks. "But you've been warned. *Everyone's* been warned." She slams a few books around. "Why couldn't I have the perfect genetics that resist ulcers *and* cancer and thus let me have my cigarettes?"
