The Library

Janet unlocked the library and walked in, setting her laptop down warily behind the desk and trying not to think about Hathor the last time she was in here. She took a drink from her extra-large mug of coffee and started working.

ETA: She popped out a moment later and stuck a note up on the door: "New teachers need to check out the Rules of Conduct and fill out a library card application in blue or black ink, damn it. Please come inside for a form. Thank you."

Janet tries not to snicker at the look of confusion on the new teacher's face when he reads the Rules of Conduct. "The prof's pretty much nuts," says Janet. "But we like to stare at him anyway."

She takes the application and looks it over. "I'm completely hopeless when it comes to anything mechanical." She nods over at Sam Carter. "I break something, I just ask her to fix it for me. Sam's in your class, right? I think she said something about applying as your TA."

Wow, does he look like the General.

She hands the application back to him. "We need your full name," she says. "Don't worry, library records are kept confidential. Dictionaries are twenty rows back, three bookcases over to the right. When you get back, I should have your card processed and you can check out a dictionary."

Mac writes Angus on the form as illegibly as possible.

"My class is less about mechanics than it is about using whatever elements are around you as a solution to the problem in front of you. If you know anything about physics, chemistry, etc. then you might want to think about it. Trust me. This isn't about making a lamp that looks like an elephant."

Mac gives her a grin.

"Twenty rows back. Three bookaces to the right?"

Janet, as a doctor, has almost completely illegible penmanship herself and a well-developed gift for reading the same from others. She types in 'Angus' on the computer and smiles smugly sweetly at Mac.

"Physics aren't even close to my forte," she says. "Unfortunately, chemistry is one of my areas of specialty hobbies and you've intrigued me. I'll check out your syllabus."

She grins back at him. "Approximately. Hope you find what you're looking for."

Mac smiles and wanders off through the stacks and comes back with a Shiar to English dictionary and a couple issues of "Popular Mechanics".

"Can I check these out please? And I'm sorry I didn't catch your name?"

"No problem," says Janet. She scans them out easily. "I'm Janet Fraiser, by the way. Nice to have you around."

"Nice to meet you Janet. Feel free to drop by the shop any time. when you're not Hathor I'll probably have these back here by tomorrow."

"Thanks," said Janet. "I'll do that. Dear God, has everyone at this school heard about my humiliation? See you tomorrow, then."
