Detention [Saturday, January 10].

Bright and early Saturday morning, Minsc and Boo waited for the small group of bad-doers to show up at the shop classroom for their detention. Normally, the chance to dole out discipline to such unruly teenagers would have him excited and eager, ready to put them through a trial that would help set them on the straight and narrow.

He even had a sign with their names, ready to cross them out when they arrived:

Unfortunately, this week, Minsc was a bad-doer, too. Apparently, encouraging your class to destroy desks was very discouraged.

Once the kids had gathered, Minsc cleared his throat. "Alright, youngling. In this workshop, there are many tools, and, more importantly, many desks and chairs that have been utterly demolished in what I promise you was a truly inspiring display. I am sure you are all here for a very good reason, so I hope you intend to work hard. Today, you will be putting them back together!"

"You only have until two o'clock, so, get to work!"

Minsc would be helping.

"Two? For having an opinion? That hardly seems fair." Despite the fact that most of the world is unfair on some level, Van Helsing does dislike when the world seems less than favorable to the ladies. Hey, he's from the Victorian era, what do you expect?

"Well, I did kind of mouth off a little under my breath a bit after I got the first one," she admitted. "But hey, I spent three days rebuilding a village to make up just one of them, so I figure I paid for it, right?"

He nods agreement. "I would think so." He takes a look around the room they're in. "However, I have the feeling this school is far different from most others."

"Oh god yes," Peyton said with feeling. "Good different and crazy different and just... different."

"I wouldn't know. This is the first time I've been to a 'formal' schooling environment."

"Really," Peyton said, turning to look at him. "Were you home schooled or are you just from a really different culture/planet/time/fill in the blank?"

"I suppose it could be considered 'home' schooling." 'Traditional' is totally out the window, but he was at 'home' when he was being schooled.

She nodded, then blushed. "God, my manners are totally out of the window. I'm Peyton. Peyton Sawyer. It's nice too meet you."

He grinned. "Obviously mine are a little rusty as well. Pleasure, Ms. Sawyer. I'm Van Helsing." No, he doesn't give a first name.

Not that Peyton isn't assuming Van is his first name.

"Nice to meet you, Van. You look like you have a little experience with putting things back together."

He wrinkles his nose, shakes his head. "My apologies. Please call me Michael." He looks at the mess of desks. "I break things frequently," he admits sheepishly.

Peyton frowned. "Michael?" Then she blushed. "Oh god, sorry, I just assumed - never mind. I apologize. It's nice to meet you, Michael."

"Not your fault. I didn't give you anything else to go with." He nods toward the desk parts. "This kind of thing happen a lot?"

Peyton shook her head. "Never seen anything like this. My first detention I got sort of sent back in time to try and solve a murder mystery, then I built houses on Endor, and now..." She shrugged. "Could be worse, I guess."

"You had to solve a murder mystery for detention?" Now he's really confused.

"Yeah," she looked around at the splintered desks in chairs. "Crazy, right? But I have to say it was a hell of a lot more fun than this."

He shrugs. "This isn't so bad." He twists a screwdriver, fastening two pieces together.

"Probably 'cause you're better at it than I am," she said with a grin, holding up the wood glue.

He grins at her, holding up a screwdriver to her. "You can do it." He explains several aspects of putting the pieces back together.

She watched carefully, then attempted it herself. "Hey, not bad! Thanks."

"You're welcome. Building is relaxing if it's not forced on you."

"I wouldn't know," Peyton said with a grin. "But yeah, I can imagine. Anything you really like doing, that you can lose yourself in... It's relaxing."

"That's what I've been told. I rarely have time to investigate things I like doing. At least, not until coming here."

"They kept you pretty busy where you were, huh?" Peyton asked, working on screwing the last leg back into the desk she was working on. "So... now that you have time, what do you want to investigate?"

He nods agreement to the first, then a slight shrug the the latter. "I'm not sure. Whatever I can, I suppose."
