Care for Magical Creatures; Friday, Period 2 [ 01/09 ].

When the students arrived for their class today, they'd find themselves in just a regular old classroom. But not for long.

"Good morning, younglings!" Minsc, the very large fellow with the scars and the armour and the tattoos and...the hamster...greeted the students boisterously, pounding a fist down on the large desk in front of the blackboard. "Welcome to Care for Magical Creatures! I am your teacher, Minsc, and this is my companion, Boo! In a moment, we shall get started, but at the moment, there is something very important we must do first! These desks! They are evil! They are restrictive! Up! Up out of the desk and quickly, children, we must destroy them entirely and make some proper space in this room!"

"Up, up!" Minsc waved his arms to encourage his students to his feet and, with a great, guttural sort of battlecry, he lifted his foot and kicked it straight into one of the desks. It went flying from the impressive blow, toward the front of the room, smashing into a thousand pieces against the blackboard and settling in a small pile of broken legs and pieces.

"Well? What are you waiting for? Vanquish these desks!"

"Ah!" Minsc looked with pride on the eventual destruction of the desks, and the space in the room it had cleared, beaming. "Much better. Hold on."

He took a moment, went to get some big comfortable floor pillows, tossing them about to make nice places for himself and the students to sit and recline. He perched on his own with his legs folded in front of him, his hamster on his knee. "This," he explained, "is much more like how we learned things back where I'm from, a place called Rashemi. Now that we are more comfortable, we can introduce each other! As you know, I am Minsc! This is Boo! I have never transformed into a creature before, but Minsc had turned human before! That was quite an experience! Please make sure to grab a sylabus (http://berserkerminsc.livejournal.com/10990.html#cutid1); there are important class rules on it! But, for now, at first, I'd like to just go around and know who some of you are! You are all such new faces! So, if you could, tell us your name, a little about where you're from, and if you have any experience transforming into creatures! Go!"

Oh dear. "I'm John Sheppard, from an apparently normal version of Earth," he began slowly, as if trying to avoid talk of transformations. "There've been other versions of me around, but as far as I understand, I'm the only one of me who seems to turn into a rabbit regularly." Maybe if he looked at his hands no one would hear?

Minsc was a ranger; his hearing was excellent. But he wouldn't laugh! He wanted to, just a little, but he wouldn't! Rabbits were very noble (and tasty) creatures!

"How regularly?" he asked; he might have let it go, but it was important information for the class. "Is it an acquired skill, Sir John, or more of a oh, goblin spit, I'm a bunny again thing?"

"Seems to happen most often around finals," John admitted a little sheepishly. "And it's completely the second thing." It was pretty obvious from his tone how much John enjoyed being a bunny.

"I am Prince Arthur Pendragon," Arthur said. He'd grown used to a pinch of madness in his instructors here. By now, it was barely a surprise. "Of Camelot. Which is in England, I've been told. I have never been touched by magic as to turn into a magical creature." He paused before adding, cheerfully, "But I've fought a fair deal of them."

Some of which also fell under the 'good fun' header.

"Not ones that used to be people," he finished, more seriously.

Noting the serious tone at the end of all that, Minsc nodded and held back his chuckle. "That's very good," he said. "Although sometimes fighting some that have been people is necessary," and great fun, but after having the class destroy desks, he'd figured he'd done enough rabble rousing for one class. "What kinds of creatures have you fought, Prince Arthur?"

"In recent years, the kingdom has suffered something of a plague of them," Arthur offered, "They've grown more fanciful. We're facing gryffins and Questing Beasts now." And unicorns, but he'd really rather not go into that. "A sorceress also sent an avanc to pollute the water, but we got rid of that."

Firekeeper frowned. She really hadn't expected a class on magical transformations. In fact, if she'd known that was the topic of the class, she might not have shown up at all. But now she was here, and thus committed.

"I am being called Blysse," she said. "He is being called Blind Seer," she indicated the rather large wolf curled up with her. "We is from forests in Iron Mountains, north of human kingdom of Hawk Haven. I have never not beened this shape."

And, yes, Minsc had noted the large wolf with great interest the moment he and Lady Blysse had entered the room. "He is your companion?" he guessed, taking carefully into consideration the subtly feral details about this girl.

"We is pack," she nodded, pleased that he hadn't assumed he was a pet. Such assumptions didn't bother her as they once did, but she still preferred when people didn't make them.

"I'm Alex Russo and I'm from New York City," she began. "2009, in case anyone was wondering about the year. I've never had experience transforming into a creature before, but I had an enchanted dragon that looked like a beagle as a pet. And I turned my brother into a bunny once."

Actually, it had been for Justin.

"I am Leto Atreides," Leto said, avoiding any titles. "From Arrakis. And I have never transformed into an animal." He smiled a little at that last comment.

John blinked. "I saw you at the coffee shop when the girls turned into guys," he marveled.

Leto blinked, looking at John. "I have never been in a coffee shop," he said. "Perhaps you mistake me for Gavin Darklighter." He missed the part about girl turning into guys, because that seemed irrelevant.

Only in Fandom, Reno mused, grinning to himself.

"The name's Reno. I'm from a city called Midgar, which used to be heavy on the industry and not so much with the givin' a spit about the people who lived underneath it, but that don't make no difference anymore anyhow, yo. And Fandom turned me into an animal once. A chocobo, which is a kinda bird people ride on instead of horses, where I'm from."

He wasn't going to add that he was a baby chocobo. Wark!

"Riding on birds instead of horses!" Minsc remarked, a little marveling. He was always interested in creatures he'd never heard about; he couldn't help it. "A bit like gryphons, maybe?"

Now this was awesome. Dōjima settled herself comfortably on to the floor, kneeling primly in her skirt. Flashing the rest of the class would not do.

"Ohaiyo!" she said cheerfully. "I am Dōjima Yurika, from Tokyo, Japan, and I turned into a bunny once this summer. It wasn't bad, I think my friends spoiled me rotten, but I don't really want to do it again."

Minsc was trying not to chuckle at some of these answers, although he really couldn't help it, at least just a little. "Not an experience you particularly deemed repeatable, Lady Dōjima?"

"I'm Merlin." He looked over in the direction of Arthur for a moment. "I'm also from--England I suppose. I can't say I've ever been an animal, myself."

Despite the unfortunate name.

"And most experiences I've had with magical ones are with Prince Arthur."
