Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

If anyone had hoped for good weather for the picnic, their wish had been granted as the day turned out to be sunny and warm. Everything had been cleaned up, spiffed up and bedazzled dazzled made as perfect as possible for the new arrivals. They deserved at least a few moments of pleasantness before the weirdness started to sink in.

May whatever deity they believed in help them now.

As usual, there were long tables set up with food and drinks, a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students. With everything in place, the picnic was ready to begin.

[OCD is up!! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"Quite," she beamed. "Perhaps I should have worn my pinafore, but there seem to be bloodstains on it. Which doesn't quite give the right impression, I fear. Have you --"

She stopped, abruptly, as she noticed his name tag, and frowned at it. "Who did you borrow that from?"

Priestly wasn't completely sure what a "pinafore" was, or why it would have blood on it, but was very sure he didn't want to ask.

He glanced down at this name tag, then back up. "Uh, the registration table? Why, are they gonna want it back?"

"Mr. Priestly might," Alice said, rocking onto her heels and back onto her toes again. Which was rather more fun to do when one was wearing high-heeled boots, but sneakers would have to suffice. "Or Miss Priestly. I haven't found him yet to determine if he's a her, or if she's a him. I was just about to ask if you've seen the mysterious Priestly in question, in fact."

Was this some kind of test? Priestly pointed to his name tag. "I am Priestly. And I'm a he. Kilt notwithstanding."

Alice was going to stare for a few moments and try to arrange her mind.

"Have you recently been hit on the head?" she asked. "Or have I, do you imagine? A good sharp blow to the head, one imagines one would remember that sort of thing, but then, if I were temporarily gone mad again, perhaps I wouldn't."

Which, of course, she couldn't leave alone without adding, "I quite like the kilt, mind you."

His assigned big sib was a crazy person.

Okay, he could roll with that.

"I'm pretty sure I didn't get hit on the head. And, uh, thanks. I like it, too."

"You're welcome," she said reflexively, adding a small bob to it. "So you're saying that you aren't my current older sibling, Dean, masquerading as a new student for strange purposes, but my newer sibling, Priestly-of-the-unknown-first-name?"

Seriously crazy person. He didn't know the half of it, sadly.
lovemykilt: (not his fault)

"Well, that depends. Are you Alice?"

"Indeed," she laughed, giving him a proper curtsy now. Which was somewhat strange to do in jeans and not a formal dress, but this rarely stopped her. "Alice Liddell, pleased to make your acquaintance, and welcome to Fandom, which delights in causing strangeness even in such things as meeting one's new little brother. You have my apologies for the confusion, and it's good to know that you're a Mister and not a Miss. Not that I would have minded, either way, but not knowing made it hard to find you."

Yeah, definitely kinda crazy. He could dig it.

"Sorry 'bout that. But I really just go by 'Priestly', so you don't have to worry about 'Mister' or anything."

"And I go by Alice," she beamed. "Which is less unusual, but it does simplify matters greatly. As your older sister, I should warn you that Fandom is an unusual sort of place. I don't mind, exactly, as adventures keep one on one's toes and all of that, but it is a bit of an abrupt departure for most people. Oh, that does remind me. Where and when did you leave, and were you intending to come here?"

These only sounded like strange questions if you didn't know Fandom.

Adventures?

"Santa Cruz. Um, I left yesterday. And I wasn't, but my parents sure intended me to come."

"Ah, I see." Alice nodded a few times. "Right. Forgive me for asking this, but ... what date was it, yesterday?"

Sure, Alice was insane, but this question - amazingly - wasn't. After all, she'd answered the same question with 1873.

"January 2nd. Why, did I cross a dateline or something?"

"Not exactly," Alice said cheerfully. "Unless you weren't in 2008 yesterday."

She frowned. "2009. It just changed, didn't it? And I just got used to saying 2008."

"Yeah, that's usually how it happens. Always a little weird for a bit after the new year."

"One would think they might start clumping them in twos, to prevent that," Alice mused. "But then it would be especially hard to remember, after the second one, since you'd been writing that year for two years now and not one."

"Plus, you'd have to think of twelve whole new names for the months."

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"I should imagine that would be the easiest part," Alice noted. "I could think of names for hundreds of months. Zertuary, Fantember, and Bounce. Bounce should perhaps be spring. The real question is, how would birthdays work?"

"Well, you'd have to have two, of course. I think I'd want my second one to be in Zertuary."

"I believe I should hold out for Bounce," Alice decided. "Have you met your roommate, yet? Should I be giving you the grand tour? I'm afraid I'm new to siblinghood of the assigned variety, more so on this end. I only arrived in May myself."

"I have! Cool girl named Naomi. And I'd say you're doing fine, but I've never had a sibling of any variety, so, uh, nothing to compare you to."

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"I ... had two sisters once, but that was a long time ago," she said quickly. "And I have a brother here, which is who I mistook you for a moment ago, which is particularly amusing in a roundabout sort of way. I don't believe I've met Naomi; my roommate is a girl named Francine. And I work at the music store, in town, so perhaps I can give you some sort of family discount, there."

"That'd be sweet. Your big bro rocks the mohawk, too, huh?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Spring 2009)

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Actually, no," she laughed. "Most of the time, he doesn't. He just looks a great deal like you. Although he had a blue mohawk for Halloween this year. I was confused as to why he'd returned to it. For all I knew, it was another holiday of some variety, or perhaps he'd decided he was fond of it."
