Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

If anyone had hoped for good weather for the picnic, their wish had been granted as the day turned out to be sunny and warm. Everything had been cleaned up, spiffed up and ~~bedazzled~~ ~~dazzled~~ made as perfect as possible for the new arrivals. They deserved at least a few moments of pleasantness before the weirdness started to sink in.

May whatever deity they believed in help them now.

As usual, there were long tables set up with food and drinks, a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students. With everything in place, the picnic was ready to begin.

"January 2nd. Why, did I cross a dateline or something?"

"Not exactly," Alice said cheerfully. "Unless you weren't in 2008 yesterday."

She frowned. "2009. It just changed, didn't it? And I just got used to saying 2008."

"Yeah, that's usually how it happens. Always a little weird for a bit after the new year."

"One would think they might start clumping them in twos, to prevent that," Alice mused. "But then it would be especially hard to remember, after the second one, since you'd been writing that year for two years now and not one."

"Plus, you'd have to think of twelve whole new names for the months."

"I should imagine that would be the easiest part," Alice noted. "I could think of names for hundreds of months. Zertuary, Fantember, and Bounce. Bounce should perhaps be spring. The real question is, how would birthdays work?"

"Well, you'd have to have two, of course. I think I'd want my second one to be in Zertuary."

"I believe I should hold out for Bounce," Alice decided. "Have you met your roommate, yet? Should I be giving you the grand tour? I'm afraid I'm new to siblinghood of the assigned variety, more so on this end. I only arrived in May myself."

"I have! Cool girl named Naomi. And I'd say you're doing fine, but I've never had a sibling of any variety, so, uh, nothing to compare you to."

"I ... had two sisters once, but that was a long time ago," she said quickly. "And I have a brother here, which is who I mistook you for a moment ago, which is particularly amusing in a roundabout sort of way. I don't believe I've met Naomi; my roommate is a girl named Francine. And I work at the music store, in town, so perhaps I can give you some sort of family discount, there."

"That'd be sweet. Your big bro rocks the mohawk, too, huh?"

"Actually, no," she laughed. "Most of the time, he doesn't. He just looks a great deal like you. Although he had a blue mohawk for Halloween this year. I was confused as to why he'd returned to it. For all I knew, it was another holiday of some variety, or perhaps he'd decided he was fond of it."

"Hey, once you go 'hawk, you never go. . . ." He trailed off, not sure how to finish that one. He cleared his throat. "Halloween costume, huh? The guy's got some taste."

"I myself had fairy wings and a very strange sort of wig," she confessed. "It's a shame Halloween is only once a year."

"Hey, nothing says you can't dress weird any time you want."

"Perhaps I shall break out the fairy wings on Tuesday, for no reason at all," she mused. "It seems a shame to have them and never wear them."

"That's the spirit. If you do, I totally wanna see."

"I promise to notify you directly," she said loyally. "Oh! That does remind me. I'm in room five-eleven should you need anything, and needing anything, I leave entirely to your discretion. Where are yourself and Naomi to be?"

Her speech patterns took a little bit of getting used to, but once he caught the rhythm, he had no trouble following her.

"211. So right below you, by, like, three floors, I guess."
