Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

If anyone had hoped for good weather for the picnic, their wish had been granted as the day turned out to be sunny and warm. Everything had been cleaned up, spiffed up and bedazzled dazzled made as perfect as possible for the new arrivals. They deserved at least a few moments of pleasantness before the weirdness started to sink in.

May whatever deity they believed in help them now.

As usual, there were long tables set up with food and drinks, a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students. With everything in place, the picnic was ready to begin.

[OCD is up!! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]
bitchprince: (and where did you come up with that one?)

And Arthur, in turn, had to translate that back into something resembling normal speech. He assumed that the servant, despite his literacy, probably had some sort of mental affliction. However, he wasn't going to indulge him by speaking slowly.

Instead, he caught onto an important detail. "Who to room with?" he asked, incredulously.

"Uh, yeah," Chad said. "They usual double up people in rooms, unless you go through the paperwork for a single or your roommate leaves."

"...Only child?" Chad guessed.

"That's none of your business."

He was starting to wonder if this was his father's idea of purgatory. Not only was he to live miles from Camelot and his duty, he was apparently supposed to share a room.

"There must have been some mistake," Arthur said. "I'll discuss it with your lord."

"Well," Chad figured he'd better get it corrected right off the back, "we don't really have a lord. The closest thing would be Principal Winchester. And she's more a...well, principal than a lord. Especially since she's a lady."

"A lady, then."

Arthur had not realised that Northumbria was quite this alien in comparison to Camelot.

"I'll see her once I am settled," he decided, with a slight shake of his head. "I suppose I'll have to find out about this 'rooming' business first." He made it sound slightly distasteful.

Chad found himself simultaneously amused and annoyed by the distasteful lilt in Arthur's voice. "It's not so bad," he assured him. "Maybe you'll get someone who's been around, too, and they can help you get used to this place. I take it you're not from around here."

"Of course not," he said, "I came here from Camelot. Weren't you informed of that?" So not only did he have to share a room, it appeared that the people didn't actually know who he was. That would make this good fun, truly.

"Nope," Chad admitted. "Just your name. That's in England, isn't it?"

Hey, give him credit. He grew up on entirely different continents here.

"No," Arthur said, slowly, "It is not."

It was definitely some sort of mental deficiency.

"Oh." Chad thought about that for a moment. "Then I have no idea where that is. Sorry. I'm from Japan. And Mexico."

In case that helped Arthur get any sort of spacial relation or anything.

"Those would be foreign kingdoms, I presume," Arthur said, revealing no particular interest in the details. "Interesting."

"Everyone here," Chad offered, since it really was his duty as an older sibling, even if at first it left Arthur thinking he was crazycakes, "is usually from a very different place. England, Japan, the past, the future, outer space, magical kingdoms..." He waved a hand, assuming Arthur to have gotten the point.
bitchprince: (...que?)

"...Magic is banned in my kingdom," Arthur said, attempting to wrap his head around what Chad had said and coming up short. So he simply diverted to those parts he did understand. "That's not the case here?" And his father had intended for him to come here?

Chad, for some reason, had to think about that for a second.

He shook his head. "Nope." And shrugged.

Banning magic just seemed like way too much work.

Strange.

Arthur was... of two minds about it. He wasn't his father, and he had never quite agreed with his violent policies. On the other hand, magic was dangerous.

This entire mental discussion was vocalised through a "Hm."

And Chad vocalized his own thoughts with a similarly pensive grunt.

"Lots of weird things happen here," he warned Arthur. "So don't be too surprised by stuff like that."

"Like sorcery," Arthur voiced, almost neutrally, and crossed his arms.

And then uncrossed them, because the movement had irritated his arm, and he was not about to vocalize the wince in question.

He was absolutely certain now that this place was not what Uther thought it was.

"Yeah, and--"

Chad was going to say turning into animals, which seemed like sorcery, so he stopped, tried to think of a different example.

"Or--"

Dopplegangers came next, which could also seem to fall under the category. He tried again.

"Sometimes--"

Random wee tiny things. Well, shit.

Chad sighed, went to place a consoling hand on Arthur's shoulder. "Um, good luck," he offered. "Maybe you should go check out the roommate situation and walk around, see what I mean. I'll be at the picnic table playing music if you need anything, Arthur."

Arthur eyed the hand on his shoulder, and only barely surpressed another wince. "Stop patting me," he said. A moment afterwards, he added, "Your assistance has been... useful." Which was the closest to a thank you Chad, a servant, would be liable to get. "Now go on."

And then he turned and walked away. Ah, tact.

Chad didn't feel like he had been very helpful, but he also felt like he'd done what he could, for now, for Arthur. He watched his new little brother walk away, rubbing the back of his head in thought.

But mostly concern. It was going to be interesting when he went to go check in with Arthur in a few days.

Very, very interesting.
