Leadership: Thursday, Period 1, Class 1. (9/4/08)

"Morning everyone," Nathan said. He took a spot at the head of the class. He was, as near darned always, dressed in a suit. "I'm Mr. Petrelli. For anyone here who might be close with my brother Peter, I'm still Mr. Petrelli."

Nathan handed out the syllabus and class rules. "Here's the overview of the class for the semester. Make sure to read it ~~as OOC rules are in there too~~. Because I'm a lawyer there is the fine print of classes being subject to change at any time.

"Today's class is going to be very easy though. First, I want everyone to introduce themselves with their name and why they're taking the class. Second?"

Nathan sat down behind his desk, looking for all the world like he was done for the day. "Someone needs to be in charge of this class. Let me know if you figure out who that is.

"And Meg? Come see me after class. Thanks."

"So you would try to get a consensus with your fellow students before doing anything?" Nathan asked.

"Who says they know anything?" said Bender. "Besides I might not like their ideas."

"So you're in charge?" Nathan asked.

"Maybe not," Bender allowed. "That sounds like a lot of people are blaming you if the room accidentally floods. But that doesn't mean they are."

Nathan snickered. "Okay then, how would you like the class to be run?"

He thought for a minute. "Do you want to run things?"

"You must have some ideas or you wouldn't be here," And if Nathan hadn't Bender would point and laugh. "I could go along with that if you offer a sweet enough deal.

"But I reserve the right to change my mind at any time," Bender said with a satisfied nod.

"So you like that I get to do the work and take the risk, and you have the freedom to try something else," Nathan said, to see if he understood.

"Maybe," Though Bender wouldn't put it like that. "I just think better on my feet."

"Though there's gotta be something in it for you, or you wouldn't do it," Bender appealed to self-interest.

"What are you offering?" Nathan asked.

"Bribery, blackmail or beer?" suggested Bender. "Or not to report you for soliciting?"

Nathan snickered. "Wouldn't that last one fall under blackmail?"

"I'm not asking for money," because he hadn't thought of it, "So extortion's more accurate. But really it's more making the most of an opportunity," explained Bender.

"All right," Nathan said. "How about this - I'll take charge of the class, and in return you promise to tell me personally if you have any problems with it."

"Can do." Bender held out a metallic hand.

Nathan went to shake Bender's hand, keeping his game face on to hide his hope that Bender didn't prove to be particularly strong.

Bender could be, but he'd had enough practice with people and their bones that his grip was just a little stronger than human and cool.

It helped that it hadn't sunk in yet that he was inwardly gloating about having talked Nathan into just doing his job.

Funnily enough the handshake made him think of Edward's, though Nathan couldn't place why. Ah well.
